Record Setting February

Fun in the Snow

While we are setting all-time snowfall records this month, there's an increasing emphasis on keeping kids focused in the classroom. There's a lot to learn, and all these snow days certainly aren't helping. Of course, we want to have some fun in the snow, too. Check out these pictures of Jefferson students and staff sledding on the Jefferson "hill" behind the school.

Battling Illness

As many of you know, we have been battling illness at Jefferson this winter. We have endured several confirmed cases of influenza and strep throat. Mr. Bill spent last weekend sterilizing and disinfecting every inch of the school. We appreciate that so many of you call the school and provide us with doctors' notes verifying illnesses. It really helps us in our efforts to keep everyone healthy. Below are some notes from our school nurse, Julie Carroll, regarding influenza and strep. Stay healthy, Jefferson family!

Influenza

Influenza, sometimes known as "the flu", is a respiratory disease caused by a virus that attacks the nose, throat, and lungs. Illness is usually mild or moderate, but it can sometimes be quite severe. It is NOT the same as the "stomach flu". Influenza symptoms include fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache, extreme tiredness, and body aches. These symptoms usually begin suddenly. Students need to stay home until they are fever free (WITHOUT fever reducing medications like Tylenol or Advil) for a period of 24 hours.

Strep Throat

Strep throat symptoms include fever, sore throat, nausea, and vomiting. Strep throat must be diagnosed by a doctor doing a throat culture. If a student is diagnoses with strep throat, he or she must remain at home for 24 hours after beginning antibiotics.

*Washing your hands regularly with soap and water, covering coughs and sneezes, using hand sanitizer, and sanitizing frequently used devices (like phones and tablets) are all good habits to help prevent the spread of illness.

The anticipation builds as our Spring Music Concert is less than one month away. Coming Soon: Spring Conferences

Jefferson School is once again using an online tool to streamline our Spring Conference sign-up. The link is currently active. We sent it out to all families for whom we have a current email and/or phone number. (The same families who receive this electronic newsletter.) If you haven't signed up for conferences yet, click on the link below to get started. Conference dates are also listed in the Dates to Remember section at the bottom of this newsletter.

If you know a Jefferson parent who hasn't received this information, please encourage them to contact the Jefferson office to be sure we have accurate contact information for them.

Superintendent Search Process

The Mankato Area Public Schools ISD 77 School Board has contracted with School Exec Connect, a superintendent search firm, to assist with the search for a new superintendent. Board members want you to be informed of the process that we will be following as we conduct the search for a new superintendent. Additionally, we hope that you will give your input to assist us in making the best selection possible.

To begin the process, the School Exec Connect consultants will meet with board members, school staff, parents, students and community members individually and in focus groups over the next couple of weeks to determine the challenges, strengths, goals of our district and what characteristics or skills you would like to see in our next superintendent.

You may choose to give your confidential feedback by accessing the Mankato Area Public Schools ISD 77 website at www.isd77.org and completing the online feedback form. All replies will be confidential. Please submit feedback no later than February 26.
