2017 Holiday Service Project - Mitten Tree
Prairie Vista Elementary School will be participating in a holiday service project that will benefit families in the Prairie Vista and Penn-Harris-Madison community. We will have a Mitten Tree in the office and each mitten will have a short description of the child's age, boy or girl, clothing size and /or toys. If you would like to purchase a gift, please stop by our mitten tree the week of November 20th and pick up a mitten. All you have to do is register your mitten with the office staff, buy your gift, and return the gift with the mitten on the outside of the package to the office by Monday, December 11th. Please do not wrap the gifts. If you would like to make a monetary contribution, we will gladly accept those as well in the office.
If you would like for your child to pick a mitten from the tree, please fill out the permission slip.
In addition to sponsoring families, we are accepting clean, gently used clothing, coats/outerwear, and boots to donate to schools that have children in need. Also, we will collect games, in good condition, to donate. Please label the gently used items as “school donations” so we can separate them from the gifts.
We really appreciate the giving attitude of our families and staff! Any support for Prairie Vista and Penn-Harris-Madison community families would be very much appreciated.
If you have any questions, please email Sarah Sage at ssage@phm.k12.in.us
LearningSphere Reminders
LearningSphere Project Idea Forms are due Friday, December 8.
Here are a few hints for helping your child choose a wonderful LearningSphere project:
1. Direct your child to a topic he or she LOVES. A large part of LearningSphere is the presentation. Your child needs to enjoy talking about his or her topic. All of our kids have things they will not stop talking about. Push them towards those topics. It only helps if they already know about their topic and they will be even more excited to further their knowledge.
2. If your child chooses to complete a research project, make the topic specific to help your child stay focused. For example, instead of researching all whales, research humpback whales.
3. If your child chooses to complete a science experiment, make sure it can be repeated. They need to take data from multiple trials.
4. Make sure your child can complete his or her own project. Although parent input is important, this should be a child-led project. Advise your child to choose a research topic or experiment that can be completed by a child.
5. If you are new to LearningSphere, the research project may be easier.
6. Make sure your child chooses a topic he or she LOVES! This is so important that it made the list twice.
Please remember that students in 3rd and 5th grade are required to complete a LearningSphere project but all students in all grades are encouraged to participate. And only the top science experiments submitted by 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are eligible to for entry in the Northern Indiana Regional Science Fair at Notre Dame.
P-H-M Educational Foundation Musical Instrument Collection
The P-H-M Educational Foundation is collecting donations of used musical instruments that will be refurbished and distributed to P-H-M Middle School students who might not otherwise be able to participate in orchestra or band. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated to help refurbish instruments. Instruments can be dropped off anytime during the months of December and January at the Educational Services Center, or at the specific times and places listed below:
Friday, December 8 - Barnes and Noble (enjoy performance by the Discovery Middle School Band)
Tuesday, December 19 - Barnes and Noble (enjoy performance by the Penn Orchestra)
Thursday, February 1 - Penn High School Winter Band Concert
Box Top Collection - Reminder
From now until February, we are going to be collection Box Tops. Send them to school anytime and in any amount! Teachers will be collecting Box Tops and the more they collect, the further their race car travels! (Check out the race in action in the library next time you're visiting the school!) The kids are very excited to help get their class race car moving ahead of the pack! So search high and wide, tell your friends and family to collect and keep those Box Tops coming!
On your mark, get set, GO!!!
