Little Cedars Elementary

Home of the Wolverines - October 15th

Message from the Principals

Dear Little Cedars Families,

This fall, students in grades 4-6 will take the Smarter Balanced (SBA) tests in math and/or English language arts. Students in grade 6 will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). These tests are a brief check-in on student learning from school year 2020-21.

Students had limited in-person time in the classroom and likely experienced fewer opportunities to learn last school year. Last spring’s SBA and WCAS testing were postponed to fall as we prioritized critical in-person instruction time for the benefit of students, families, and district staff. SBA and WCAS tests were shortened this fall to ensure that students and teachers would have enough time at the start of school year 2021–22 to establish relationships, routines, and activities.

Our school is scheduled to take the tests ELA CAT October 28th, Math CAT November 2nd, and WCAS (6th grade only) November 4th.

For more information about the SBA and WCAS tests, visit:, and click on the name of the test. To try out an online SBA practice test or WCAS training test, visit:

Please call or email Jodi Jones or Ryan Painter if you have questions about state testing.

Thank you for continuing to work with us to make sure your student is successful. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to better support them. We want your student to leave us with a solid foundation of skills and a future full of opportunities.

Counselor's Corner

I hope this newsletter finds you well.

I want to share a resource with you that I find valuable. The Child Mind Institute has great articles on a wide variety of topics about children’s well-being, including anxiety, friends and socializing, sleep, ADHD, supporting healthy development, and many other subject areas.

They have a weekly newsletter anyone can subscribe to, as well.

Last year, the teachers and I talked quite a lot about the importance of being flexible during pandemic times. Thankfully, life is much more consistent in many ways this year, but you and your children may still be experiencing more unexpected changes than usual these days. It’s a great trait for us to model for and foster in our children, regardless. I liked this article on the topic:

Fall conferences are coming up soon, as you know. I hold my own conferences with those who request one, and sometimes join in on the student/parent/teacher conference, usually at the request of the teacher. Please contact me directly if you’d like to meet via Zoom or have a phone call with me during this fall’s conference week. 360 563-2906

Take care, Libbie
