Kindergarten
April was a busy and exciting month in Kinder-land! We were careful observers all month long as we dissected and planted seeds. Now we are pros at discussing the life-cycle of a seed, parts of a plant, different kinds of plants, and their needs. Photosynthesis is our new favorite word, and if you need help in the garden, you know who to ask!
All year long we have been builders and engineers, but we took it to the next level this month designing and creating “mouse houses”. It was fascinating to watch the creative process unfold!
Sight words, CVC words, and digraphs are the spring focus in Kindergarten, as well as sounding out words to write on our own. Our young authors are hard at work combining sight words and words spelled phonetically to write whole sentences independently!
As mathematicians we continue to focus on number sense and fact fluency, utilizing learned strategies and discussing which strategy is most helpful. Our rich discussions and knowledge base will benefit us as we move into comparing and contrasting 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes!
We have field trips coming up on May 31 and June 11 to Plumper Farm and The Oregon Zoo respectively. Look for more information coming from your child’s teacher soon!

3rd grade
This month in third grade, we are beginning our SBA testing! We are keeping it light-hearted and fun by having some special treats, wearing our comfy clothes, making posters, and some extra fun breaks.
The trip for Akers/Meeuwsen to Tryon was fun. They learned many fun facts and legends about the local plants/animals. Bethune is set to go May 10th.
In math, we are moving into multiplication/division in math (2 digit by 1 digit, connecting multiplication/division, and problem solving). In literacy, we are working on publishing our opinion writing. We are also working on several language standards, including possessive nouns and comparative adjectives. We will continue to practice SBA questions so the kids are familiar with the formatting of the assessment.
4th grade
Dear 4th grade parents,
We will be starting state testing for math. In reading we will be wrapping up text features and then focusing on drama, prose and poetry. In math we are continuing doing double digit multiplication using visual models to show our thinking. We will wrap up with a review of fractions.
Science will continue with vision and light. Writing will consist of personal narratives. Social studies will be finishing our pioneer unit leading to our field trip to Aurora Colony in June.

5th grade News
Students have completed science fair projects and presented them to their classmates. We are proud of all of the hard work from our scientists.
We have been practicing the algorithm for multiplication and just finished our math unit on whole number multiplication and division. We are beginning a unit on multiplying fractions, focusing on the concepts and meaning behind it.
In Social Studies, we have begun looking at explorers and will be looking at the history behind our country's origin.
It's hard to believe that we're already in the 4th Quarter; our fifth graders will soon be sixth graders.
6th grade
We are excited to have finished up testing for Language Arts and are ready to tackle the math portions of the SBAC. We just finished reading an amazing book, Refugee in Language Arts and have created an art show/display in our pod inspired by the book. In math we are busy graphing a variety of graphs including stem and leaf, box and whisker plots, and histograms. Finally, in Science we finished up a unit on Thermal Energy.

Wellness Classes
When a child sits in class, they are bombarded by sights, sounds, smells, and distractions everywhere. An abundance of sensory information can make it difficult for some kids to sit in class and learn. Sensory processing is the way that our bodies manage information from all their senses.
How can you help your child boost their attention span and ability to focus?
Incorporate various forms of movement and physical activity into their daily routine. Here are some fun ideas:
Jump, spin, scoot, dance, bounce, outdoor play, obstacle course activities (Vestibular activities)
Use weighted bands, chewy foods, move heavy objects appropriate for the child’s age (Proprioceptive activities)
Animal walk, bridge exercises, yoga, sit on a bouncy ball (Core activities)

Counselor
As our 3rd through 6th graders begin their SBAC testing here are some helpful tips to bolster self confidence and competency. Students who worry they won’t do well (for whatever reason) and students with an anxious temperament who worry about making mistakes or performing in general, from singing in music class or going up to bat at baseball- tend to feel more test anxiety and are more prone to heightened worry during this time of the school year. Talking with your students at home about the helpful strategies below can support getting through the test and putting the brakes on any anxiety that might creep in.
Have a plan. For example, don’t spend too much time on any one question, read each answer and then cross out the ones you know aren’t right to help you narrow your choices, pick an answer and stick with it. We all have a tendency to second guess ourselves but it can lead to wasted time and wrong answers.
Break things up. When you start to feel panicked, look for a way to change focus. Take a moment to take deep breaths, focus on a happy memory or close your eyes for a moment. Have a positive self talk mantra that works for you, “I can do hard things.”
Practice calming techniques. Ask your students which mindfulness technique is their favorite to use in class.
Accept when you don’t know something. Sometimes the best way to manage anxiety is to accept that you don’t know the answer to a question and move on. Focus on the next questions ahead and do your best.
