Second Step Curriculum delivery in Connection Groups
Linked here is an introductory letter published by the Second Step Curriculum developers giving a broad overview of the work that will be covered in our Connections Groups throughout the school year. Please let us know if you have questions or you would like to have a more in-depth look at the information. We will be providing a weekly preview of the lessons for your information.
Preview of Lessons (Week of 11/15):
Grade 6, Lesson 5: Breaking Down Your Goals
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will practice breaking big goals down into smaller, short-term goals.
Question: Think of a time you achieved a big goal, such as learning to drive or graduating from school. Tell your child about your goal and the series of smaller steps you needed to take to achieve it. Ask your child to tell you about a goal they have.
Grade 7, Lesson 5: Overcoming Roadblocks, Part 1
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to use If–Then plans to overcome roadblocks. If–Then Plans help your child anticipate potential roadblocks and come up with plans for addressing them.
Question: Ask your child to explain to you what an If–Then Plan is. Work together to make a plan for how your child can respond positively to a difficult situation they might encounter at home.
Grade 8, Lesson 5: Pursuing My Interests
Summary: In this week's lesson, your child will identify and respond to positive and negative influences that may affect them while pursuing a goal.
Question: Tell your child about something positive or negative that influenced you as you were working toward a goal. For example, a friend who helped you find a job or learn a new skill. Ask your child about positive and negative factors that may influence them.

MSD Highly Capable Program Referral Window
Every fall, we start the process to identify new students to receive highly capable services. Any student in grade K, 1, 3, 5-11 with parent/guardian permission may be referred by staff, family, or community members. All 2nd and 4th graders are universally screened and therefore do NOT require a referral form. The nomination process for the Highly Capable Program opens on November 29th and closes on December 10th. When a referral is received, the screening process will be triggered to determine a student’s eligibility for highly capable services. The screening test will take place in February and the post-screening test will take place in March.
The Referral Form will be available in Skyward’s Family Access on November 29th. If you prefer paper copies, they can be found on our Highly Capable Program webpage.
