March Principal's Message
Fun Learning
We had another fun-filled month of learning. On February 14th, we celebrated Valentine's Day and the one-hundredth day of school. Our students are 100 days smarter and they sang, danced, and did fun art projects to celebrate their achievements.
We continue to grow and learn new curriculum at PVSD and our teachers attended professional development for our Next Generation Science Standards and our math adoption, Eureka this month.
Our transitional and kindergarten classes did a wonderful play, "Mother Goose's Goose is Loose", which is told in rhyme. A picture is at the bottom for your enjoyment.
Our first-grade students learned about contractions and did a "contraction surgery". Please see the attached pictures of this adorable activity. Our counselors have started teaching Second Step to our first graders, which is a research-based curriculum that focuses on the social-emotional development, safety, and well being of children. This is a wonderful program that has been around for forty years with excellent results.
The third-grade team read about Alexander Graham Bell and learned about author's purpose, identifying key details, and comparing two texts on the same topic.
The fourth-grade students are learning about California history and they are excited about the Gold Rush in house field trip next month.
Our fifth-grade students learned about the body systems and created wonderful posters in our makerspace. They also had a flag presentation by our Local Lions Club and they learned facts about the American flag.
We had our annual spelling bee and all of our kids did wonderfully. We are excited for Karvi Patil, who will be going to the finals.
All our teachers received Newline interactive TVs for their classrooms. They are engaging and offer a hands-on experience for our students. We also received training on the Newlines and it really is awesome what this modern technology can do.
Congratulations to our Standing Ovation recipients, Dinah Chun and Jessica Hart. We appreciate your dedication and hard work.
La Mariposa is excited for our wonderful teacher, Nicole Sadowsky, for being named Educator of the Year by the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce. We are proud of Nicole's accomplishments and look forward to celebrating with her.
Please remember to notify your child's teacher if he or she is leaving early. This is especially important at lunchtime because we need to locate your child and retrieve their belongings from the classroom if we are unaware that they will be going home early.
Our wonderful PTA keeps their website up-to-date with upcoming events and information. Click here to access the PTA website. They are always in need of more parent volunteers to keep doing the wonderful activities we have at La Mariposa. Don't forget to sign up for the annual Dinner Dance and Silent Auction. This is always a fun evening.
Thank you for everything you do to help make La Mariposa the wonderful school it is. We are looking forward to the exciting learning March will bring.
Respectfully,
Justine Wienken
