Eubanks Counselors' Corner
March 2022
February in Review
We started the month by working with our wonderful EIS Student Ambassadors to organize a sock drive for the Dallas ISD Homeless Education Program. EIS students donated socks, then our EIS Ambassadors attached kind, inspirational notes to each pair of socks. We hope that these socks warmed the hearts (and feet) of some of our Dallas neighbors!
We also spent time helping our Student Council to collect treats and write notes for the Southlake Police and Firefighters. It was so nice to see their faces light up when we handed the boxes filled with treats to them! The notes were greatly appreciated by our local heroes.
We ended the month by working with the amazing Dawson Middle School counselors and administrators to assist our current sixth graders in preparing for their upcoming journey to middle school. The DMS counselors visited our campus to talk to students about DMS electives and scheduling. Students had a chance to ask questions so that they could make informed choices about their middle school year.
March Focus Topic: Cooperation
- The process of working together to the same end.
- Joint operation or action.
- Assistance effort or labor.
- Voluntary arrangement in which two or more entities engage in a mutually beneficial exchange instead of competing.
Cooperation means working together to do more than you can do alone. Demonstrating good cooperation is being a person who understands that the good of the group is more important than the good of the one. Learning how to cooperate will help with success in school, in relationships with friends, and in life overall. Listening carefully to others is the first step in demonstrating cooperation. It is essential to remember that cooperation is a basic life skill that assists us in working together so that collaboration and creativity will ultimately bring about success.
Cooperation is an important value. To have real cooperation at school everyone needs to follow the school rules. These expectations have been put into place to keep everyone in the school community safe and cared for.
- Excellence (everyone trying hard to do their best in everything)
- Integrity (which is about honesty in the way we act and speak)
- Respect (for ourselves, others, and property)
- Responsibility (for ourselves, our belongings, and our actions)
Talking with Youth about Ukraine
Even in homes where attempts are made to protect them, children are hearing about the war in Ukraine. Some overhear their parents’ conversations or phone calls, some hear the news on in the next room, and others engage with friends on the bus, at school, and on social media. This article from the Crisis Management Institute highlights some basic starting thoughts on how to reassure children and address their fears while still being honest.
