What We Are Learning This Week
Language Arts: This week,we will be reading Looking at Lincoln by Maira Kalman. We will be identifying the main purpose of a text and using correct capitals in places, people and dates. In spelling this week, we will continue studying words with dipthongs ou, ow, oi, and oy. We will have our spelling test on Friday, February 19th .
Social Studies: This week, we will integrate a lot of our social studies with Language Arts. We will learn more about Presidents' Day and start studying how historical figures and good citizens helped shape our community, state, and nation.
Math: This week we will wrap up our review of the first 7 polygons we've looked at. Learners should be able to identify the number of sides for these shapes:
Circle
Triangle
Quadrilaterals ( squares, rectangles, rhombuses, trapezoids)
Pentagons
Hexagons
Heptagons
Along with that we will look at three new terms octagon, nonagon, and decagon.
We will also continue to focus on reviewing counting money up to $1 and reading and interpreting bar and picture graphs.
Science: This week as we continue to explore with magnets, we will explain why magnets attract metals and answer the question, do magnets attract all types of metals.

With that being said, we are leaving on Wednesday after school and will be in class with our teaching idols all day on Thursday and Friday! Mrs. Moore will be my substitute and will take great care of our kids. Austin PTO Seeking New Members for 2016-2017 PTO Board
Do you have ideas you would like to see happen at Austin Elementary? Do you have a talent like planning, or spreadsheet skills, etc. you would like to share with the PTO? Or do you just want to become more involved?
Here’s your chance. The Barbara S. Austin Elementary PTO board is looking for members for the 2016-2017 school year. Many positions held by our 5th grade parents moving up to 6th grade need to be filled, so there are many to choose from. Maybe there’s one to fit your talent!
Many of our board members work outside the home, work from home, and are stay-at-home parents. So, yes, it is possible to be a board member.
The PTO board’s mission is to partner with the school in elevating the elementary experiences of our learners, parents, educators, and staff. If you want to help make a difference in your child’s experience, become a part of Austin PTO!
Complete the application that was e-mailed to you via the PTO Connect (or e-mail Mrs. Naragon fora copy) and turn in to Mr. Wu or Mrs. Naragon. Applications will be accepted until Thursday, March 24.
