Make sure your child is on the road to reading success
Ask any educator to name the single most important thing parents can do at home to help children learn and do well in school and they will likely say, “Encourage your child to read!”
Here are some ways to make reading a priority for your family:
· Read together. Your child may enjoy reading to you or taking turns reading chapters aloud.
· Go to the public library. Help your child sign up for a library card. Each week, have her/him browse and check out new books.
· Offer suggestions. Think about your child’s interests. Find books or articles about them. Ask the librarian for help.
· Start a family book club. It does not have to be formal. Just set aside one night each week to talk about something you have all read. You will get the benefit of one another’s company and a good discussion.
· Create a reading nook. Some kids love to read anywhere. However, a cozy reading spot can make reading more appealing.
· Suggest a series. When there are several books about a character they like, kids often keep reading, book after book.
· Let your child see you reading. If your child sees you with your nose in a book, s/he will be more likely to want to read herself/himself. Be sure to talk to her/him about what you’re reading
Homework tips for parents
· Help your child get organized. Make sure your child has his/her supplies such as pencils, pen, eraser, pencil sharpener and a dictionary. · Get into a routine. Set a regular time for homework every day. · Limit distractions. Turn off the TV and other electronics during homework time. If your child is using the computer for homework, check in periodically to make sure s/he is getting homework done. · Be a motivator and monitor. Ask about assignments, quizzes, and tests. Give encouragement, check completed homework, and make yourself available for questions and concerns.
Communication
We are in constant communication with the classroom teachers. We communicate the child’s progress, as well as to correlate the curriculum with ESL instruction.
Parents are encouraged to become involved! Please feel free to call or e-mail at any time.
Reminders
• Please make sure your child gets enough rest and comes to school each day. • Develop a homework routine. • Read 20-30 minutes each night. • Check your child’s backpack and binder(s).
