From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
BookCon week was a huge success again this year! Each day our students expressed their love for reading by engaging with the many creative activities planned by Ms. Carley and Ms. Choo. As parents and teachers, we know how essential reading is for intellectual and academic development. We're thrilled that so many of our students have committed to the joyful habit of daily reading. I'm certain it will enrich their lives and enhance their understanding of themselves and the world around them. I want to extend a special thank you to our librarians for planning and coordinating this year's event.
In the coming week we look forward to the CDS Science Fair! We have several middle school groups participating and I think you'll be very impressed with their curiosity, attention to process, and skillful application of the scientific method.
I would also like to remind you that we will hold a Parent Information Session on November 21st from 3-4pm. In this this session, we will discuss strategies for staying connected to your child throughout their challenging tween/teen years. We will share practical tips for getting your child to open up and how we can reduce their stress through effective communication at home.
Have a great week!
Benjamin Scoville
Director of Middle School

2019-20 BookCon Week!
Ms. Moss is a widely known author who has written more than 30 books over a 20 year period. We were very fortunate to have learned from her at CDS this year. If you'd like to learn more about her you can watch the spotlight video below.
Grade 7 Studies Characterization in The Outsiders
Through this project, students have the opportunity to think about their own challenges in life as well as what they care about. It is a great book with some very important life lessons, as well as interesting characters and situations which elicit a variety of responses. Our students have been digging deep into these characters to draw out how they survive, and how the harsh reality of their lives affect them. Look for these posters in the hallways upon completion.

Group Dance Presentations in PE Class
In their physical education classes, our middle school students have been working feverishly on their group dance presentations. With the goals of self expression, movement patterns, and musical flow and rhythm in mind, each group has been tasked with creating a self choreographed dance performance to a song of their choosing. Not shying away from this daunting task of not only creating, but performing in front of an audience, each group went above and beyond the expectations.
Several groups went as far as creating their own mashups, mixing multiple songs together for the track they would use for their performance. Others chose to include creative outfits and props, all adding to the excitement and increasing the entertainment value. There are certainly students in our middle school that have a bright future in dance and movement, should they choose to pursue this road further!

Practice the skill of sequencing in EAL Class
To practice the skill of sequencing through speech, students were placed back to back. One partner had to explain the steps of drawing a picture that only they could see to their partner. This task was much more difficult than students originally thought! Upon reflection, students were able to identify the value of saying things in the right order, why it's important to be specific, and how this can be helpful in their writing too!
