Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze , evaluate, and create media. Media literacy is very important in the society we live in today. Media literacy comes in many different ways, through video games, television, radio, internet, books, magazines, music, billboards and all other forms of media. In today the 21 century schools use the media literacy approach. In today's language arts classes students are learning about media literacy in the world. I have personally learned how to interpret and analyze media literacy. This helps me understand the media better. Like for example a billboard on a street some people may look at it and think it means nothing but I know there's a deeper message hidden in the picture of the billboard. I have also learned to analyze more complex texts through the concept of media literacy. I can also create media through texts, cartoons, words and many other ways. That is what i believe media literacy means in my own opinion.

Gangs are a very critical issue in our society today. What matters is what we can do to help this issue and make it better. What I pledge to do regarding this topic is help spread awareness about gangs to the people around me and to the people of the world. I want to do that by posting messages on twitter about the terrible effects that gangs have in our society and supporting causes like "put the guns down" campaign on social media. The "put the guns down" campaign ask gang members to put down their guns and stop the violence and make peace. I also want to help by speaking to the youth and inspiring them to achieve better things in life instead of joining a gang and ruining their lives. I want the youth to be the leaders of our future not the gang leaders of our future. In the future I want to donate money to gang prevention programs so more youths can get the message. To change the world I will help families in the hood in need because a lot of times these families are struggling to survive and are in need , so their children join gangs to try to make money to provide for their families. Lot of these families dont even have a father figure in the picture so the kids have no guidance and are lost, I wanna help families like that. I wanna change the world and this is what I will do to change the world.

Axe , in their TV commercial ad, "Axe peace". Aims to sell their product by depicting countries who are supposed to be at war but instead of going to war they show acts of love and affection. At first when the commercial began the countries seem to be preparing for war, because the actors seem to be hostile but when they approach their enemies they turn out be their lovers and kiss and hug. for example the Asian women and the american soldier, The helicopter lands and the american soldier comes out with a gun and looked like he was gonna kill her and her village but instead they hug each other and start making out. Axe uses transfer as an emotional appeal to transfer the emotion of love and peace instead of war through actual military people, to persuade their audience to purchase their deodorant spray. Its trying to make people think if you buy their spray then you will have peace and love. Using a suspenseful, chilling and affectionate tone, the intended audience for this Axe commercial is towards both teens and adults.
smore # 4 How does Gender Advertising Affect Society?

I see advertising as a good thing but sometimes it can be a bad thing for society. Advertising is good when it shows positive messages or its funny, but sometimes it can be bad because it shows negative things. For example a women in a commercial is having an orgasm to a shampoo bottle that is portraying women as sluts and that has a negative impact on society because now men see it and think all women are sluts. Also young male kids see the commercial and grow up thinking women are a sex toy. In some instances some ads degrade both men and women and that has an even worse negative impact on society because now there just making the human race feel like crap. But at the same time ads are good for society because some of them have a good message like commercials that inspire people to accomplish whatever they are aiming for and that anything is possible. Advertisements somewhat reflect societal values and somewhat dictates them, because they show life in our society and when people see these ads it makes them want to do what the ad or the commercial says.
smore # 6 Should Apple Fix?

I think apple shouldn't fix the unlocked iPhone encryption because it is a hazard to our security and private information and if they do unlock it then that would be destroying apples encryption software which is the best in the world. That would lead to hackers, scammers, and thieves to be able to steal your phone, money and valuable information once again. If apple is forced to unlock that iPhone then that would set us as society way back to the early days of smart phones like the iPhone 4 and previous models where hackers could hack your code and steal your credit card information and keep your phone. But thanks to the encryption software that apple created on the iPhone 5 thieves or hackers cant get into your phone without your finger print or password even if they stole your iPhone it was useless unlike the old days. Before when you got your iPhone stolen thieves used to take it to a tech place or phone fixing place and they would unlock it for them and they would be able to keep your phone or sell it, nowadays thats not the case it is literally impossible without the pass code do you guys really want to go back to those days? If the FBI forces apple to unlock this iPhone then now every iPhone can be unlocked by anybody. Sure the FBI is trying to be mutual by saving lives but giving up our security is not worth it.

The two presidential candidates that I have researched was republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and democratic candidate Hilary Clinton. I found that Hilary Clinton even though she is a woman she supports abortion that is very interesting to know. I also found that to protect our national security she plans to be very "aggressive'' against the Isis terrorist group and our enemies, people are not sure about a Woman leading our Military. For Trump I found that he has been married three times and has divorced twice, he also has had multiple girlfriends. The craziest thing that I found about Trump was that he once dated a black model I find that ironic because isn't he a "racist". It is very important to research the legitimacy of the candidates because we have to see if there really about what they say they are. To be honest most people don't fact check their candidates they just go with everything they say cause they support them and want them to win. We cant rely on the media to tell us the truth because the media always twist the truth around to their favor. Like if one media outlet doesn't like your candidate their going to make up false stories and statements to try to degrade your candidates chance of winning. The problem with not looking up the truth behind these candidates is that you might get caught up in lies and brainwashed from what the truth or the reality really is.

What made the Warsaw Ghetto so powerful was the fact that Jewish people were willing to die to escape death. The Jews knew that rebellion would not stop the German's but some still made the decision to resist, they were so determined to fight that they even smuggled weapons into the ghettos. "The Warsaw ghetto uprising in the spring of 1943 was the largest single revolt by Jews. Hundreds of Jews fought the Germans and their auxiliaries in the streets of the ghetto". "Thousands of Jews refused to obey German orders to report to an assembly point for deportation. In the end the Nazis burned the ghetto to the ground to force the Jews out. Although they knew defeat was certain, Jews in the ghetto fought desperately and valiantly". During the Warsaw uprisings many Jews suffered a harsh death in battle, but they still went out and fought even though they knew their destiny. The Jews were inspired to rebel by themselves and their desperate want to get out of the situation that they were in. "Under the most adverse conditions, Jewish prisoners succeeded in initiating resistance and uprisings in some Nazi camps. The surviving Jewish workers launched uprisings even in the extermination camps of Treblinka, Sobibor, and Auschwitz-Birkenau. About 1,000 Jewish prisoners participated in the revolt in Treblinka. On August 2, 1943, Jews seized what weapons they could find—picks, axes, and some firearms stolen from the camp armory—and set fire to the camp. About 200 managed to escape. The Germans recaptured and killed about half of them." During the Warsaw ghetto rebellion the Jews used many Techniques to get their people to join the rebellion against the Nazi Germans. The Jews used the sight of their own people getting killed as fuel to get payback, they also saw that their own people were getting killed so to honor their people a lot of Jews joined in on the rebellion. "Despite being vastly outgunned and outnumbered, some Jews in ghettos and camps did resist the Germans with force. The spirit of these efforts transcends their failure to halt the genocidal policies of the Nazis." Today the kind of uprising that I see today In the current political climate is the Black lives matter campaign. They are standing up against cops killing unarmed Black men because of racial profiling. There have been way too many Black men killed by cops and they were unarmed too, even though the cop could have handled the situation in a better manner they still decide to shoot and kill. The black community has gotten tired of all the unjustifiable killings of harmless black men by the hands of the police and now they are standing up against it.
smore # 11 Is Technology sent from Heaven?
Luis Sevillano,

Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. Science is the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. What George Orwell is saying in the quote in chapter nine is that science and technology is advancing in a very fast way and it just keeps on going. But in the society in 1984 that has failed to happen because of poverty and the wars and revolutions that took place in that society. Also they were so distracted by all that going on that they had no sort of thoughts and thinking is the key to advancing in technology. Thinking could not survive in the 1984 society. That's what I think Orwell means by “science and technology”. That's why the society in 1984 is less advanced than it's supposed to be.
smore # 12 Happiness Vs Freedom

In chapter three Winston states that "That the choice for mankind lay between freedom and happiness, and that, for the great bulk of mankind, happiness was better." My thoughts on happiness vs freedom is that happiness is better because you could be the most free person in the world and still not be happy. Some people have very few freedom but are very happy so thats why happiness changes everything. That is the reason I agree with Winston. I see the same choice in today's society, an example of that is the people of America, even though we know the government is watching us and every action that we take on the internet, we still dont care because they say that they do it to keep us safe from terrorism. Even though they are taking away our freedom of privacy, we allow them to because being safe makes us happy. Edward Snowden and his experience exemplify this because he exposed the government of secretly spying on civilians, he thought that people would take a stand against the government for their freedom but that never happened. That was because people were willing to give away some of their freedom for security and comfort and those things make people happy.
smore # 13 Gaslighting
Luis Sevillano,
Mrs.Danley

1 February 2016
Gas lighting is a form of mental abuse in which a victim manipulated into doubting his or her own memory, perception and sanity. In politics it has gotten easy for leaders to gaslight the American public because the American public believe anything the people they support says. Gas lighting equals lying, the politician uses emotion or powerful words to get the people to believe what they are saying is true. In politics today an example of gas lighting is Hilary Clinton, Hilary Clinton lies a lot she lied to the American people about Benghazi and how she is going to do all these things to change the country. The media plays a big role in helping politician’s gaslight because they are the ones who cover everything that’s going on in the country. One way we can combat gas lighting is by believing in your own opinion don’t let other people affect your opinion. Just because a powerful person says something doesn’t mean it is the truth. We need to hold people responsible for the things they say, don’t just go with what they are saying we have to question what they are saying and form our own opinions.

In today’s society we have developed an unhealthy relationship with our technology, which had led us to be disconnected to the world around us. But there are things we can do to prevent this from becoming a permanent reality. One of those things is spend more time outdoors because if we’re indoors all the time then we are more likely to be on our device’s all day, we should go outside hang out with friends, play sports, go to a concert and try not to be on our phones the entire time your outside because then that would be a waste. Social media is a hard addiction to get rid of it’s just as hard as trying to quit smoking cigarettes. But it is an addiction that we can control. Think about the useful things you could be doing instead of wasting time on these sites, you could be learning a new language, make new friends physically, get fit, the list is endless. Another way to control social media addiction is by not thinking about it so much because the more you think about getting on the worse the addiction gets. Just log off for 3-4 hours and stop thinking about it. I am going to use the power of social media for good by posting positive messages on social media, like about education, a healthy lifestyle. I would also use social media to make charity pages and donation to underprivileged people all over the world. One thing I will not do is be on my phone 24/7 to help the cause. Social media is not just about friends and liking pictures or gossip, we can make some very positive things out of the use of social media.
Part 2
Looking back at the previous smores I did in the media literacy course I took this year. Looking back at my first smore entry my views have changed a lot on media literacy, I thought that media literacy was all about just about newspaper articles, books, or writing about authors or poets that have changed the world of literacy. But no it is deeper than that this is not just a normal language arts class, media literacy is about so many different things like world hunger, dystopian societies like Syria, racism, growing up in the struggle and so many more. Media literacy also teaches you a lot of life lessons, it taught me many like when we read 1984. The way the society turned into a dystopian society and how everybody was controlled by the government, Julia and Winston vowed never to turn on Julia but in the end he did. That taught me that you can't trust nobody not even your closest friends or loved ones. This class was different from other language arts classes I took because we just didn’t sit and write essays and read books the whole time, we actually learned very important life lessons and mistakes that we shouldn’t make that could impact our future. This is a cold world you just got to learn to survive. Media literacy also taught me that it is up to our people to make our world a better place, we have to stand up for our freedom and our beliefs. Just like v for vendetta did or else our future generations will be lost. In my opinion what could be done in the future to make this class better is we should have less writing assignments and more hands on assignments.
