6 000 years of the waves of Lake General Carrera washing up onto the sodium bicarbonate is what caused the wonderfully smooth walls of this cave. The blue colour is a reflection of the waves below it.


The Caves

  • This cave network is only accessible by boat
  • The hue of the walls change based on the time of year and water levels
  • The colours go from grey to bright blue
  • They are on the Chilean side of General Carrera Lake

  • Called General Carrera Lake on the Chilean side, and Lake Buenos Aires on the Argentine side
  • 1 850 km squared with 970 km squared of that on the Chilean side
  • Biggest lake in Chile
  • Glacial lake which drains into the Pacific Ocean
