B-C-S Continues Legacy of Being the Premier School District in Region; Ranked #62 out of 608

This week the Ohio Department of Education released the 2018 Ohio School District and Individual School Report Cards. Cleveland.com ranked the performance of all the districts in Ohio, and ranked B-C-S as number 62 out of 608. This ranking is the best of any school district in our four county region! See the Cleveland.com story below.

B-C-S Superintendent Dr. Guy Parmigian responded with the following:

I am extremely proud of our 2018 report card results, which are due to the diligent efforts of our staff, students, families—along with a very supportive community! I am particularly proud of our district results in light of the uncertainty and anxiety surrounding the de-valuation and potential closure of Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant that was swirling around. The focus that was demanded to get these results is truly remarkable. I like to tell people that our school district has at least one thing in common with the nuclear power made in our back yard—we are both resilient!

We should all celebrate that Oak Harbor Middle School, under the leadership of Mr. Spurlock and Ms. Carroll, was the only school in Ottawa County to earn an Overall Grade of A !!! Congratulations!

I am also pleased to see that our District Report Card shows us that we improved on our results last year, with the exception of one area as evidenced below!

We are all eager to dive into this report card and student achievement data to determine how we can continuously improve opportunities for our students. I do not think we will be satisfied with an overall B as a district. We will strive overall for an A! The annual school and district report cards are important indicators of our success!

However, there are other indicators that are also important such as the caring nature of our staff and the student-centered and family-like environments that we create, which are hallmarks of B-C-S; but which are tougher to measure and distill into a grade. We should remain proud of the purposeful work that we do to establish school cultures where our students and staff can thrive and celebrate their uniqueness, creativity, and individuality! There are skills that we teach our students like resiliency, and civic-mindedness that are equally difficult to measure, but of which we are proud of as part of the well-rounded education we strive to provide at B-C-S.

We will use our focus and resiliency to continue to improve for our students and families.

#MakeADifferenceMonday

Tune in every Monday for #MakeADifferenceMonday where we will feature a stakeholder, student, or fellow alumni answering "Five questions for B-C-S"

This week B-C-S is featuring, Director of Technology, Devin Seslar

1. Please share your name and job title at B-C-S Local School District. How many years have you been employed with B-C-S?

  • My name is Devin Seslar, I am the Director of Technology for Benton-Carroll-Salem Local School District. This will be my 5th year with B-C-S.

2. Please share what a typical day is like for you as the Director of Technology?

  • My typical day as the Director of Technology starts with checking emails and the helpdesk tickets to ensure the morning will start off smoothly. From there I make my way to every building to check in with Teachers and Staff for any technology issues. After the morning rush, daily tasks come into play which could be updating computer labs, password resets, smartboard/projector repairs, copier support, wireless troubleshooting and anything else technology related.

3. How do we utilize technology for our students on a day to day basis?

  • Over the last 5 years at Benton-Carroll-Salem, we have implemented over 1200 new Chromebooks into the educational environment enabling teachers and students to have an online presence with the new online technology tools.

4. What is one challenge you face as a Technology Director?

  • One of the challenges the Technology Department faces is technology is always ever changing, and in an age of 21st-century learning, unless you stay up with the trends, you will miss something.

5. Please share one of your favorite memories from the Summer of 2018.

  • One of my favorite memories this summer (actually, ever in my life) was driving 7000 miles (134 hours) in a car with my family seeing several of America's greatest landmarks including the St. Louis Gateway Arch, Cadillac Valley, Palo Duro Canyon, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, driving through a Redwood tree in California, Golden Gate Bridge, Seattle, Washington, The Badlands, Devil's Tower, Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, and Pikes Peak all in 12 days!

Thanks to all who came out to meet Officer Welch at the Meet & Geet!
