Meet Mr . Randy Pitre, recently appointed facilitator for CAPS.

Prior to being appointed to his current position at CAPS, Mr. Pitre served as the assistant principal at Sunset Middle School. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Mass Communications from Southern University. Mr Pitre was a highly respected radio announcer for radio stations KJCB and KNEK. He later attained his certification and his Master’s in Educational Leadership from Southern University. Mr. Pitre has been in the education field for the past 25 years. He’s been associated with the funeral industry for the past 20 years. At the present time, he’s an attendant with Williams Funeral Home of Opelousas, La. He is a member of the Mohorn Baptist Church in the Plaisance community, where he serves as Assistant Chairman of the Deacon Board and is also the leader of the Prayer Warrior Ministry. In addition, he is currently the President of The Lafayette Metropolitan Alumni Chapter of Southern University. Finally, he’s happily married to the former Beverly Sereal.

First Baptist Church of Eunice loves Highland Elementary School! First Baptist Church of Eunice left the building on Sunday to pray for local schools. Highland was blessed with this group of people that came out to pray for an amazing school year!!! KROTZ SPRINGS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Meet Mrs. Michele Thibodeaux, newly appointed principal of Krotz Springs Elementary.

Mrs. Thibodeaux is passionate about education and loves working with students! She has recently completed her sixteenth year as an educator in St. Landry Parish. She is a product of the St. Landry Parish Education system as well; attending school at Lawtell Elementary and Northwest High School. Ms. Thibodeaux earned her Bachelor’s of Education from UL Lafayette and her M. Ed. from McNeese State University. Her teaching career started in 2003 at South Street Elementary where she taught third and fourth grade. She then transferred to North Elementary where she taught third grade, as well as fifth and sixth-grade math and science. Mrs. Thibodeaux then became the assistant principal at Lawtell Elementary in 2009 where she stayed for seven years. In 2015, she was assigned to principal at North Elementary and was there for four years. While principal at North Elementary, Mrs. Thibodeaux successfully completed NISL leadership training through the state department. North Elementary also became a Leader in Me School under her leadership. Though she is heartbroken about the closure of North Elementary, she is excited to be at Krotz Springs Elementary! Ms. Thibodeaux is looking forward to working with the teachers, students, and community of Krotz Springs to make positive impacts on students’ lives!

Meet Mr. Ricky Julien Sr., principal at Opelousas High School! He was appointed in the middle of the year last year and didn't get a formal introduction. He has a new administrative team this year!

Ricky Julien Sr. is a native of Sunset, Louisiana. Mr. Julien is the son of Mary Joanne Julien of Sunset, Louisiana and John Richard Strauss Jr. of Prairie Boss, Louisiana. He is the husband of Mrs. Alisha Nicole (Davis) Julien and the proud father of two young men, Ricky Julien Jr. (18) and Braylon Julien (10). Mr. Julien was educated in the public schools of St. Landry Parish, attending Grand Coteau Elementary, Sunset Middle School, and Beau Chene High School. He received his Associate of the Arts Degree in Jazz Studies from the Alvin Batiste Jazz Institute at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. He also earned a Bachelor Degree in Music Education from Southern University A & M in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Mr. Julien also possesses a Master of Education Degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, graduating with top academic honors from his class. Mr. Julien has devoted 13 years to public school classroom instruction and is currently in his 5th year of administration serving as the newly appointed Principal of Opelousas High School in Opelousas, Louisiana. He has mentored many students throughout St. Landry Parish and St. Martin Parish as a teacher, band director, community activist, and an administrator. Mr. Julien has served on several boards including the following: the St. Landry Parish Federal Credit Union Board of Directors as President, the J.K. Haynes Foundation & Legal Defense Fund, Inc. as President, the St. Landry Parish P.A.R.E.N.T.S. organization as Vice-President, Concerned Citizens of St. Landry Parish as President, the St. Landry Parish Democratic Party Executive Committee as Chair, Iota Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. as an active member, the Teacher Retirement System of Louisiana Board of Trustees, and Phi Kappa Phi National Academic Honor Society as a Graduate Member. He is a Life Member of the Southern University National Alumni Federation, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity Inc., and the Alvin Batiste Jazz Institute Alumni of Southern University. He has also received several distinguished awards including the following: African American Hall of Fame Inductee for the St. Landry Parish NAUW 2015, Distinguished Sinfonian Award Mu Psi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity Inc., the “Home Town Hero” Award from the Honorable Mayor Reggie Tatum of Opelousas, La for education advocacy, the J.K. Haynes Foundation Excellence in Education Award, the UL Lafayette Black Faculty and Staff Academic Achievement Award, ULL Academic Achievement Award, the Father of the Year 2017 Award by 100 Black Men of Lafayette Inc., National Who’s Who Among College Students, and the St. Landry UniteCoalition of Educators (SLUCE) for Leadership as Spokesperson and Founder of the Coalition to name a few.

Meet Gayle G. Brown, recently appointed assistant principal at Opelousas High School.

Gayle G. Brown holds a Master’s of Education degree from the American College of Education in Educational Leadership and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education from Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge. Mrs. Brown also holds professional educator certifications in Educational Leadership (All levels) and Elementary Education (1-8). Mrs. Brown began her educational career in 2002 as a first-grade teacher at Grolee Elementary School. In 2007, she became the math teacher for grades fifth and sixth at Grolee Elementary. This paved the way to her passion and love for teaching mathematics to middle school students. Mrs. Brown has been a middle school math teacher at various schools throughout St. Landry Parish and her students have had exemplary scores under her educational leadership. She has taught at Leonville Elementary, North Central High, and Lawtell Elementary. Mrs. Brown’s love and passion for mathematics and student achievement led to her becoming the NIET Math Master Teacher and the Math club sponsor of the Mathletes at Opelousas Junior High School. Mrs. Brown spearheaded the 1st math competition ever in St. Landry Parish. Under her leadership, Opelousas Junior High School held its 1st Annual math competition that hosted various schools from Lafayette, St. Martin, Evangeline and Iberia Parish. Mrs. Brown has played a critical role in developing job-embedded professional developments, data analysis and teacher support. Mrs. Brown believes that all children can learn but each learns in a different way and at different rates. She believes that with hard work and perseverance we can touch each child in a special way. Keeping the atmosphere positive is the key to success as well as keeping the lines of communication open among staff, students, and parents. Mrs. Brown feels that teamwork is the ultimate way a school can be successful in reaching the goal of helping a child attain his or her full potential.

Meet Markenia B. Jackson, recently appointed assistant principal at Opelousas High School.

A native of Lafayette, Louisiana, Markenia B. Jackson is a two-time graduate of Northwestern State University. In May of 2009, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. In December of 2009, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications (Rhetoric). In December of 2015, Markenia earned a Master of Education in Administration from Lamar University. Earning this degree allowed her to pursue her passion for educational leadership. Mrs. Jackson's background is ELA and Speech Education, and she entered the classroom in 2010. She has taught middle and high school English language arts in St. Martin, Lafayette, and Iberia Parish. She spent most of her teaching career at Acadiana High where she taught 9th and 10th grade English in various capacities. Mrs. Jackson is coming from Northwest High School where she served as the Assistant Principal for the last two years. In this new role at OHS, she believes she can bring effective action for long-term change. Her hope is to see more children obtain college and career readiness skills that will carry them into their adult lives

Meet Alishia Vallien, recently appointed administrative assistant at Opelousas High School.

Alishia Vallien, M.Ed. is the new Administrative Assistant at Opelousas High School. She has two decades of successful teaching experience. Mrs. Vallien has served as Parental Involvement Chair, Lead Math Teacher, School Improvement Team, Testing Coordinator, and 504 Chair to name a few. Mrs. Vallien is very involved in the community of Saint Landry Parish. She serves on the Democratic Party Executive Committee, Louisiana Association of Educators Board of Directors, Vice President of the Democratic Women of St. Landry, Vice President of the Saint Landry Branch of the National Association of University Women. She serves on the Opelousas Little Theatre Board, the Board of the Southwest Louisiana Sickle Cell Association and she is a member of the Saint Landry Abilities Board of Directors. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Women United. Mrs. Vallien serves as an altar server and a reader at Holy Family Church. Mrs. Vallien is a highly effective teacher and is looking forward to working with the Tiger family.

OPELOUSAS MIDDLE SCHOOL

Meet Mrs. Marcella Fisher, newly appointed principal of Opelousas Middle School. Mrs. Fisher began her career in education as a 4th-grade teacher at Park Vista Elementary. She then became an ELFA Literacy Instructional Coach at Creswell Elementary. She moved on to become the Assistant Principal at Port Barre High School for two years and then at Park Vista for four years until which time she accepted a position as the principal of Southwest Elementary. She remained at Southwest for two years.

Mrs. Fisher is excited and optimistic about becoming principal of the new 5th and 6th grades school which was recently named Opelousas Middle School. She shares in St. Landry Parish School District’s dedication to caring for our students and providing them with a quality learning environment. She, along with her faculty and staff, is committed to ensuring their students are successful.

Meet Mrs. Crystal Compos, the Assistant Principal for Opelousas Middle School. She is a native of Sunset, La. and a proud graduate of Beau Chene High School. After high school, she served in the United States Army for 5 years and was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky. and Schofield Barracks, Hi. Mrs. Compos graduated from UL Lafayette with a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education and went on to earn her Master’s in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education. She taught 5th and 6th-grade mathematics at South Street Elementary for 8 years before moving to Arnaudville Elementary as a 7th and 8th-grade math teacher. She then served as the Administrative Assistant at Arnaudville Elementary for 2 years and returned to South Street Elementary as the Assistant Principal for the past 3 years. Mrs. Compos is looking forward to serving the students, staff, and community of Opelousas Middle School and is excited by the unique opportunity to be a part of the inaugural team that gets to lay the foundation for all the great things to come from Opelousas Middle School! #OMSproud#weareOpelousasMiddle

Meet Jeanne Shaw, the administrative assistant at Opelousas Middle School.
She is a native of Opelousas, Louisiana and a proud graduate of Opelousas Senior High School. After high school, she attended Northwestern State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish in 1981. In order to perfect the language at a cultural level, she moved to Durango Mexico and taught English at the University of Juarez for two years.
After returning to Louisiana, she earned an Ancillary Certification in Elementary Education at levels K-5. She taught Spanish to 5-8 graders at Sunset Elementary for 19 years and at Beau Chene High School grades 9-12.
In 2013, she became Administrative Assistant at Southwest Elementary. She has served under two principals, parents, teachers, and students; inclusive of community leaders. She enjoyed serving as School Test Coordinator, 504 Chairperson, organizing student activities, parent-teacher conferences and working with students concerning discipline; moving from negative to positive.
Mrs. Shaw sees all assignments as opportunities to serve others. She serves with excellence, integrity, and dignity.

PORT BARRE HIGH SCHOOL

Sedonia D., one of our upcoming seniors, is currently in India participating in a special student program called "360Plus Leadership Collective". The program offers low-income students from America, India, and other countries throughout the world an opportunity to travel to parts of India to learn about its economy, culture, and significance all while tying our learnings together through one theme. This year’s theme is Youth Citizenship, and every day, we have “circle talks” to discuss what we experienced that day and how it relates to that topic in their community as well as ours. Meet Mrs. Sherika Guidry-Simon, the new Assistant Principal at Sunset Middle School. She is a native of Broussard, Louisiana and a proud graduate of New Iberia Senior High. She is married to Shane Joseph Simon. After high school, she attended UL Lafayette and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education (1-5) with a minor in Special Education Mild/Moderate (1-12). She went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education. Two years later, she earned another Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from American College of Education. She taught 6th-8th grade ELA, Social Studies, and Science Resource classes at Delcambre High School for seven years before moving to Loreauville High School as the Lead special education teacher. She taught Algebra I, Civics, English I in an inclusion setting for grades 9th- 12th for five years. She then served as the Administrative Assistant for 2 years at Plaisance Middle School. While at Plaisance Middle School, she successfully completed the NISL leadership training. Mrs. Simon has devoted 16 years of her life to the public school system. She is looking forward to working with teachers, students, community, and staff members of Sunset Middle School.
