Campus Safety Assistants Needed for 2021-22
Do you have a heart for kids and want to join the Walnut team? We are going to be increasing the number of Campus Safety Assistants next year, and applications are being taken now. If you would like to find out more about this opportunity, feel free to contact the school office or call/email Mrs. Wall at awall@conejousd.org. You can also go straight to the CVUSD Employment webpage at: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/conejousd
Last Day of School Schedule
The last day of school will be Thursday, June 10th. We are still following a minimum-day schedule, although it will look different than in a typical year. Whether Blended or Remote, Cohort A will attend school from 8:30-10:00 a.m., and Cohort B will attend from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Teachers will assign the appropriate number of reinforcement minutes that day, as well, so that students have the usual number of minutes for a minimum day schedule.
Measure I Projects Slated for this Summer
This summer, Walnut will continue to benefit from the Measure I community bond. Have you had the chance to see the beautiful new playground surface that was completed last summer? This year, our projects include new roofing for classroom buildings and new, energy-efficiency windows across campus. Thanks, Measure I! Would You Like to Join School Site Council? Or Represent Walnut on a District Advisory Committee?
Walnut has openings for parents to join our School Site Council. SSC is made up of parents, teachers, and other staff members who join the principal in setting goals, monitoring progress, and discussing budget items for our school. Members commit to a 1-year term but may serve up to 3 years. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month from 3:15-4:15 p.m.
We also need representatives for District Advisory Council (DAC), Special Education District Advisory Council (SEDAC), and District English Language Learner Advisory Council (DELAC). If you are interested, or would just like more information, please indicate your interest on the English or Spanish form below. The form also includes more details. Thank you!!

Sora Book App is Ready for Student Use!
We're excited to offer the free Sora app to our students to begin using now and continue through the summer and into next year. Starting June 1, students will have personalized access to Sora through their ClassLink account. Sora gives students access to thousands of free books to "check out" online. The books can be read on any digital device. Since students log in through an authenticated account, they will only be able to check out books for their age range. Look for the email from Mrs. Wall that explains more details, including all of the terrific options this reading app provides. Feel free to get started now! These videos provide short directions on how to log in for the first time and then how to use the app itself:
Learning Model Survey
All CVUSD families are asked to submit a Learning Model Survey form for each child currently attending school, TK-11. The survey itself describes different options for next year. Our plan at Walnut is to be back to a full-day, in-person schedule for all grade levels. The overwhelming response so far has been this "traditional" option. However, if your family needs a different option, you will want to indicate that on the survey. Thank you to everyone who has responded so far! The survey closes on Friday, June 4th.

Walnut Elementary School
Walnut is a neighborhood school with a BIG heart, where every student is valued and encouraged to develop a lifelong love of learning. We believe in developing the whole child, so we invest in the visual and performing arts, technology, and physical fitness in addition to traditional academics. We were recently one of five schools in Ventura County named as a California Honor Roll School. We are committed to our mission statement, Academic Excellence for All in a Safe, Enriching Environment. Walnut has an active PTA, School Site Council, and English Language Advisory Council. Each of these groups of parents and community members would LOVE to have YOU join them in making sure Walnut provides the best possible learning environment for students and families. Please contact us if you'd like to know more. --Mrs. Wall, Principal
