From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
What a busy week! Congratulations to all of our Winter Park Band students on their performances at Winterfest, the Band Winter Concert, and the Baldwin Park Winter Spark parade over the past few days. It was a successful week to wrap up the end of our performances for the 2019 calendar year!
Thank you so very much to all the families who contributed to the generous gift that Mr. Smith and I both received. We are both very appreciative, and especially thankful to work with such outstanding students and families every day!
Winter break is a great time of year to make sure your student's instrument is in great performance condition and also is stocked up with the necessities for Band class. Long-needed cleaning and repairs for your horn? Repair shops would be happy for your business over break. Still playing on a beginner model instrument from 6th grade? It's time to look into an instrument that is a step up in quality to help your student's tone. Many of the best instrument brands - Yamaha, Bach, Conn-Selmer, Buffet, Schilke, etc. - produce an "intermediate" level of instruments that are quite an increase in quality from beginner instruments without the price tag of a "professional" model. If you are thinking about finding a better quality instrument, both Mr. Smith and myself would be happy to offer suggestions or models to look into. Mouthpieces, reeds, valve oil, slide grease, mutes, sticks, mallets, stick bags, and so much more are essential equipment that students need to setup for success. I'll be sending out a document tomorrow with lots of suggestions for accessories to look into, and they all make great gifts!
If your student is not currently studying privately, I encourage all our Band students and their families to look into beginning private study with a private lesson teacher. Wether a student is learning a musical instrument to pursue a career in music, or simply for musical fulfillment and recreation, private lessons are one of the best investments that parents can make for their musical child. We are very lucky to have many skilled private lesson teachers in the Winter Park/Orlando area. I encourage you to take in our Private Teacher page on the Band website and contact one of the teachers on the list to begin the process.
I hope you all have a very Happy Holiday season, a Merry Christmas, Happy Haunukkah, Happy New Year, and joyous time together with family and friends. Thank you for a successful semester, and looking forward to the spring!

SOLO & ENSEMBLE
What's next:
Now that students are signed up for the performance option of their choosing for S&E, now the real work begins. Preparation of a solo piece or chamber work is a very individual task, but no one should be preparing their music alone. Seek out help from anyone you can - Mr. Clemente, Mr. Smith, your private lesson teacher, a section leader, your middle school band director, etc. Feedback from someone you trust to be honest with you is invaluable in preparation for S&E.
For those students performing a piece for S&E that requires a piano accompanist, you need to have an accompanist secured before we leave for winter break at the very latest. Your accompanist needs just as much time to prepare their part as you do to prepare yours. Also, you need to schedule at least 2 rehearsals with you accompanist before your performance at S&E. If you are still searching for an accompanist, please consult the Recommended Accompanist List on our Band website for contact information for a small selection of local accompanists.
