HMS Bearcat Bulletin

October 2018

A Note from Ms. Buschmann

Today is World Teachers Day. It was first observed in 1994 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and continues to be a day to remind us that education is a fundamental right and teachers are an essential piece of that.

World Teachers Day gave me cause to take the opportunity to reflect upon how lucky I am to be in the Gasconade County R-1 School District. We have a staff that is willing to work hard and constantly strives to make our school better, but we couldn't do it without the incredible support from our community and outstanding kids. I hope you enjoy the newsletter this month and help us spread the good news and good happenings at HMS.

Kindness Week

Promoting Kindness through PBIS

One of the cardinal expectations for students at Hermann Middle School is that they be respectful. They can show that by using an appropriate voice level, following adult directions, caring for school property and supplies, and in a variety of other ways. For the week of October 8, we are focusing on "Be kind to adults and peers" and sponsoring a kindness week at HMS.

Throughout the week we will have various lessons and dress up days to address the expectation of being kind and have some fun. The Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Leadership Committee felt this was an important lesson to focus on. During early adolescence, kids have the expectation of themselves and those around them to be and do everything perfectly. When perfection is not the result- unkindness towards others or themselves is often the result. Lessons will focus on empathy and ways to show kindness to others.

I have included an article that I found from "The Washington Post" on raising nice kids. I hope you will find it as compelling as I did.

Student/Parent/Teacher Conferences

Thursday, Oct. 25th, 2-7pm

Blue Pride Drive

Hermann, MO

We got great feedback from parents on the format of our fall conferences last year. This year, we once again are encouraging students to accompany their parents to conferences. Students will identify strengths and weaknesses in each class and be prepared to share their goals with their parents and get feedback from teachers.

Also join us for our Scholastic book fair and share the love of books and reading with us.

Cardinal Calendar Sales

HMS is selling 2019 St. Louis Cardinals Calendars and we need your help! These sales support funding for student activities such as field trips, reward days and eighth-grade celebration.
