St. Mike's Matters - Thursday Notes
January 18, 2018 Issue #16
Dear St. Michael Families,
Our annual Catholic Schools Week celebration is almost here! During the week of January 28-Febuary 2 our school celebrates our community and our Catholic identity through various service projects, fun activities, and themed dress days. Our entire school will be filling my office with socks for our parish prison ministry and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Individual classes will have their own service projects as well. The week also includes a family pizza picnic, a Catholic vocations fair, and a school skating party at Skateland (thank you Lewis/Charneski family!). We are also holding the championship round of our National Geographic Bee at 2 PM in the gym on Tuesday, January 30. Come join us for this special competition featuring the classroom geography champions from grades 4-8. Please see the link near the bottom of this newsletter for the complete calendar of events.
Please help us kick off Catholic Schools Week at our Open House and New Family Registration on Sunday, January 28th from 11 AM-1 PM. We invite you to join us to meet your child’s teachers for next year and to learn about your child’s curriculum for the upcoming year. As current parents, you are our valued ambassadors of Catholic education and your recommendations directly boost our enrollment. I know that many of you discovered our school through word of mouth recommendations, so please help us provide a transformative PK-8 grade education to more children by inviting just one new family to our open house. Imagine the impact we can make! We are offering you a gratitude gift of a waived registration fee when a new family registers and indicates that you referred their child to our school. This is our small way of thanking you for partnering with us to grow our family of families. We will be accepting registration forms for the 2018-2019 school year for new families starting at 11 AM that day.
It is that time of year when the school starts planning for the upcoming year. Two of our faculty members will be concluding their distinguished careers in education at the end of this school year and heading into retirement. Mrs. Joanis has been a faculty member at our school for the past 23 years, originally hired to teach 4th graders in the 1994-95 school year. As you know, she has curated our beautiful library and nurtured a love of reading within our students as our school librarian. Our Pre K teacher, Miss Deedee, will also be retiring at the end of this school year. Miss Deedee joined us from the Sacred Heart Pre K program in the 2016-2017 school year. She has helped us continue to develop and grow our outstanding Pre K program. Her classroom is simply a fun, inspirational, and engaging learning environment for our 4 year old students. Miss Deedee and Mrs. Joanis will be deeply missed. Please congratulate them on their retirements and thank them for their many years of service as Catholic educators!
Blessings,
Connor Geraghty
Principal

Notes from the Health Room
Hello St. Mike’s families! Belated thank you to Mrs. Getchman’s 5th grade class! In keeping with the theme of staying healthy at school, they created signs to remind students and staff to practice good hand washing to prevent the spread of germs. The students were able to create their amazing signs during their Computer Lab class – thank you for taking the time to make them!
If you haven’t made your New Year’s resolution yet, it’s not too late! Here are some tips to Make Health Your Resolution:
Healthy You: Make healthy food choices, be active, make an appointment for a check - up, vaccination, or screening. Know your numbers – weight, blood pressure, cholesterol. Wash your hands often. Be smoke free. Get enough sleep. Learn and practice a new health tip each week. Make a new friend.
Healthy Family: Plan to eat more meals together as a family. Encourage and support physical activity. Put together a family health history. Know where to go for health care in town if you do not have insurance. Keep pets vaccinated and healthy. Add a health related web site to your favorites list, and check weekly updates. Spend more time together. Be courteous and practice good manners.
Healthy Home: Go green. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Install smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide alarms on every level. Keep cleaning products and medications away from children. Have a winter weather emergency plan, and stock your home and car with necessary supplies. Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and hypothermia. Never use generators, grills, camp stoves, or similar devices indoors.
Healthy Community: Volunteer at your church, school, or one of the many community center s needing help or an extra hand. If you have received help from others, try to repeat the gesture. Extend a common courtesy wherever you are – they are always appreciated and hopefully duplicated.
Healthy Workplace: Stay home if you are sick. Wash your hands often, Participate in healthy workplace programs, Take steps to prevent job stress. Reduce work injuries and practice good body mechanics.
Don't throw away those stamps!
