Learners also worked in small groups to listen for blends in text. Each group had 3 learners. Each group had 3 jobs; reader, listener, writer. They made a list of blends that they found.

How's the Rainforest going?
At the beginning of the week, they worked in cooperative groups to come up with plans to construct the rainforest. Not surprising to me, most of the plans looked similar (i.e. paper, cardboard, tape, etc) So, I let them at it. For two days, learners cut butcher paper, wrapped, and taped. But we are going to compare our trees to that of actual rainforest trees. To tell the truth, it is a painful process for me, because I HAVE to sit back and watch. (It is not easy to sit back and watch when you have already been through the process, but look at it from their eyes). This is what learners need to work through the process. Learners NEED the opportunity to cut, paste, create, and make a mess. They NEED to evaluate and re-evaluate their work and go back to make changes. They NEED the process. And the product needs to look like first graders made it. If it was perfect, it would not be authentic. They have put rainforest on cabinets, under tables, and on poles. I am proud of their perseverance and how hard they worked. We are also building community in the process. I can't wait to see what it becomes.
***We believe learners will do challenging work when failure is embraced as a valuable part of the learning process and they feel safe and valued.
