Parents,
Our Project Care message this week was to revisit the specific skills that students can use each day to help them learn and be successful at school. In our Second Steps lessons students have learned that there are specific Skills for Learning that will help them be successful at school each day.
The first Skill for Learning is listening with attention. In order to be a good listener students have to look at the person who is talking, keep their ears open, mouths closed, and body still.
The second Skill for Learning is being able to focus attention. When students focus attention it means that they are concentrating on the specific task at hand and blocking out all other distractions. When a teacher is talking, they are focusing on the teacher and blocking out other noises or movements in the classroom. When they are doing their math, they are focusing on completing each part of the problem until all the problems are completed.
The third skill for learning is positive self- talk. This means that they need to come to school with a positive attitude each day and need to tell themselves that they can do it and are going to give their very best effort on everything that they do.
The fourth skill for learning is following directions. Students need to listen and focus their attention on the teacher’s instructions or on the instructions that are given on their work. When they follow directions they should try and take PRIDE in doing things the right way the very first time.
The fifth and final skill for learning is to ask for what they want and need. If there is something that they do not understand or if the teacher’s instructions are not clear to them, they should raise their hand and ask the teacher for help.
If you get a chance go through these skills for learning at home and have your student practice raising their hand and asking for help. Have them say something like, “Mrs. _________, I am having trouble understanding this, can you help me?”
Until next week…….
