Brookside Bulletin

September 2022

Dear Brookside Parents,

We extend a warm welcome to students, parents, and families of Brookside Elementary, Home of the Tigers! We look forward to working with each member of our school community. This year's theme is "Be Your Best When It Matters Most." We believe that each and every day matters most as we strive for excellence in educating your child.

We're off to a great start! It's been wonderful to see our students return to school full of excitement and energy to begin a new school year. Students have settled in to their new classes and are reuniting with old friends while busily making new friends. It's going to be a great year!

School Safety

The safety of our students is our number one priority. In an effort to provide increased safety for all students at Brookside, we will lock the doors to the building except the main entrance by the office during school hours. ALL visitors will be asked to sign-in and wear a visitor badge. Thank you for your help in this matter!

School Picture Day

School picture day for all students will be on Friday, September 23. Picture information sheets will be sent home with students on Tuesday, September 6. If you would like to have pictures taken of your students who are preschool age, photographers will be here between 8:30 and 9:15 to take their pictures. Thank you to our PTA volunteers who will be helping out that day.

District Development Day

There will be no school for students on Monday, September 26. Teachers will be attending professional development classes and will not be here to receive students. Thank you!

Donations

Donations are an important source of income for our school. With this money we are able to take student's on field trips, purchase classroom supplies, and do fun classroom activities. You can pay a donation by logging into your account on iCampus and selecting "More" on the right hand side. From there you will see a "Fee" section where you can make a donation.

Morning Routine

Students needing to arrive early to school are welcome to come in the lobby beginning at 8am.

A bell will ring at 8:45 and the students will have the choice to go to breakfast, the computer lab, or outside to play.

Note: Our west computer lab will be open at 8:45 each day for student use. Students are welcome to work on iReady reading or math, or homework assignments. There will be a paraprofessional in the lab to supervise and help students.

Another bell will ring at 9:00 and students are welcome to go to their classrooms or continue to play outside until the bell rings at 9:10.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Zones and Parking

We appreciate the efforts of all parents and staff members in providing for the safety of students in our drop-off and pick-up zones. Please help us by ensuring all students are using the crosswalk when crossing through the pick-up zone and parking lot. Please pull all the way forward to the east side of our drop-off and pick-up zones. We appreciate everyone's efforts to increase safety in our parking lots and drop-off and pick-up zones before and after school. If you need to exit your vehicle, please park in a designated parking spot. Thank you for your support!

Note: By law, bus zones cannot be used as drop-off and pick-up zones even if no buses are present.

Students Walking, Riding Bicycles/Scooters & Crosswalks

We have many students who are walking and riding bicycles/scooters to school each day. Because of the number of cars and students outside at the end of the day, students who ride their bikes or scooters to school have been instructed not to ride them on school property. We have provided training for students to use sidewalks and to follow the instructions of adult supervisors and our crossing guard. We have instructed students to use the crosswalks in front of the school and when crossing 400 South. We ask that all parents please instruct their children on these and other safety measures to better ensure that students safely make their way to and from school each day.

Breakfast and Lunch

The National School Lunch Program waiver that provided free meals to students has expired. This means that school meals will no longer be automatically free. You will need to submit a Meals Benefits Application in order to qualify for free or reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year. Qualification is based on factors including household size, income, participation in assistance programs such as SNAP, FDPIR, and TANF, as well as living situation such as homelessness and migrancy.

Online applications became available after July 12th. You may access an application by going to your Infinite Campus Menu, then scrolling down to More and clicking on Meal Benefits. Any application signed before July 12th does not pertain to the 2022-23 school year. As a reminder, households must apply every year to confirm eligibility for free or reduced-price meals.

If you do not qualify for free or reduced-priced meals, school meals are available at the paid rate of:

Elementary:

Breakfast- $1.50

Lunch- $2.00

Secondary:

Breakfast- $1.50

Lunch- $2.50
