CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP, Jan 13-Jan 17, 2020
Hello First Program Community,
Term 3 has arrived, and students and teachers have returned with energy and excitement to begin the new year! Four weeks off at winter break is a long time (we usually have three). The date for Lunar New Year can range from Jan. 21 to Feb. 20. In case you are curious, if Lunar New Year occurs in January, then it is likely that our school has a long (four week) winter break, and a short Lunar break. But if Lunar New Year occurs in February, then it is likely that our school has a shorter (three week) winter break and a one week Lunar break. I had a parent ask why we do not have a week off this for Seollal—I hope that explanation helps!
We began 2020 by welcoming four new students in the First Program:
In Kindergarten, welcome Elsa An, and Ann Kim (Chae-ri’s sister! ^^);
In Grade 1, welcome Gain Kweon;
And in grade 3, welcome Jihu Park.
We are very happy to have new students joining the First Program, and we welcome them and their families to our school community.
A reminder about school uniforms: as discussed with the FP PTA Council back in October, all students are to have the Dalton navy blue sweatpants. This is part of the PE uniform, and should be worn on days when students have PE. We will remind the students day by day, as needed. Thank you for your support!

Report cards will go out to students on Monday, so please expect to receive that after school. There are several events coming up in February and March that we will share details about as they near. For now, please view the “Dates to Know” section below to see the many events.

House
Dear CDS Community,
In term 1 and 2, we piloted the new FP House program. This program is rooted in the 6Cs that helps transform our community into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive. Based on the reflection, the faculty have agreed that students would benefit from developing the skills in the grade-level classroom. Therefore, starting in February, FP House will occur every two weeks. The other weeks where students do not have House, they will have SEL (social emotional learning) time in their homeroom. We are hopeful that this change will positively affect the students’ social and emotional growth.

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring G3 and Korean.
G3 with Ms. Minot
It is so nice to be back from break and hear all of the fun things the students did with their families. Grade three jumped right back into routines and curriculum. We started our new units on weather, economics, fractions, persuasive writing, reading and understanding nonfiction books. Students have enjoyed sharing their opinions in writing class and using OREO as a way to organize their thoughts. Term 3 is off to a great start!

This week, the students celebrated the New Year and they made a new plan. They also studied how to explain.
The first graders made New Year’s party hats and they took a commemorative photograph. They also did a sentence writing activity.
The second graders marked the Year of the Rat, created a mouse bookmark. They also explained what they liked to their friends.
The third graders made a bucket list for the new year. They wrote the five things they want to accomplish during this year.
The fourth graders made a 14-day palm planner. They came up with three things they could do every day. They will do the work for 14 days and develop good habits.
