8th Graders Words of Wisdom
If you could do 8th grade again what would you do different?
What advice would give to a rising 8th grader?
This year I had a really good year because I tried to live everyday like it was my last, living as much as possible and I tried to find the good in everything. I advise all of the upcoming 8th graders to stay out of drama and make the best out of everything they do. I also advise y’all to be as friendly as possible. :) - Lily Dupuis
I would dress out in PE and do homework when it is assigned... and study. - Pete Browning
I would study harder, always be on time and respectful to teachers. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Stay away from peer pressure. - Chloe Williamson
I would pay more attention in class and complete all of my work. I would take my teachers seriously. - Brooklyn Strevel
I would study harder. 8th grade will take you by surprise so work hard study hard and do all your work. - Joseph Guarisco
I wouldn’t play around in class. I would take advantage of all opportunities and not procrastinate. I would make better choices. - Jeh Holmes
Be active outside of school or do extra curricular activities make sure you have good grades have fun and don’t be stressed out and be organized. Don’t Procrastinate. - Trent Battle
Pay attention in class don’t get your phone out during class because it really is a distraction. Don’t talk when you're not supposed to. Stay out of trouble. Study for your tests!! -Harrison Byrd
Don’t Procrastinate on due dates! Make time after school to finish a project or homework. Focus more on school than anything else because school really is important, so you can get a good education -Lauren Capps
If I could do 8th grade over again I would have focused more on school. Finished all my classwork. Follow all the rules therefore better portraying our school. -Abby Cox
School is coming to an end, which means summer is about to begin. So here are some activities you can do during the summer with your family/friends:
Go to a waterpark (Waterville is located in Gulf Shores)
Have a fun picnic with your friends (down at the Bayfront park, it's free)
- Go to a trampoline park (Get Air is located in Mobile, The factory is located in Gulf Shores)
- Go Fishing on the pier in Fairhope
Go to the beach
Go to the Wharf (shopping, laser tag or a concert)
Go to the mall with your friends
Counselor's Corner:
8th graders are working on al.kuder.com this month to complete their 4- year plans. All 8th grade students are required by the ALSDE (Alabama State Department of Education) to complete 4-year plans each year to prepare for the transition to high school. Students seem very eager to explore course offerings and plan ahead for this next phase in their lives. We wish them the best in the coming years!
Please keep in mind, you only have a few more days to focus on your grades and exams. Do well and study hard to finish this year strong!

The Obstacle in our Path
There once was a very wealthy and curious king. This king had a huge boulder placed in the middle of a road. Then he hid nearby to see if anyone would try to remove the gigantic rock from the road.
The first people to pass by were some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers. Rather than moving it, they simply walked around it. A few loudly blamed the King for not maintaining the roads. Not one of them tried to move the boulder.
Finally, a peasant came along. His arms were full of vegetables. When he got near the boulder, rather than simply walking around it as the others had, the peasant put down his load and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. It took a lot of effort but he finally succeeded.
The peasant gathered up his load and was ready to go on his way when he say a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The peasant opened the purse. The purse was stuffed full of gold coins and a note from the king. The king’s note said the purse’s gold was a reward for moving the boulder from the road.
The king showed the peasant what many of us never understand: every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.
Recipe: Muffin tin potato gratin
cooking spray
2 tablespoons butter
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
salt and ground black pepper to taste
2 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Spray 12 muffin cups with cooking spray or grease with butter.
Heat butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook and stir garlic in the melted butter until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add flour to garlic mixture; cook and stir until mixture is smooth and thickened, about 2 minutes.
Slowly pour milk into flour-butter mixture while continuously stirring with a whisk until sauce is smooth and thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and stir Parmesan cheese into sauce until cheese melts from the heat of the sauce; season with salt and pepper.
Divide the potatoes among the 12 prepared muffin cups and spoon cheese sauce over potatoes.
Bake in the preheated oven until potatoes are tender, about 25 minutes.

News Story:
Officer Milton of the Atlanta Police was called to arrest a 12-year-old girl for stealing shoes at Family Dollar. He felt sorry for the girl after she told him why she was stealing the shoes. She was stealing the shoes for her sister, because her family couldn’t afford them. Instead of arresting her, the officer gave her a ride home and bought the family four large pizzas. He convinced the police department to open a facebook page to help this family get money. Read more at http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/instead-punishing-girl-stealing-cop-helps/.
