Library Shenanigans
at West Avenue Elementary - October, 2016
The Library is Open!
Welcome back to the West Avenue Wildcat Library! October is my favorite time of the year and many fun things are being planned! Remember, the library is opened during the school year Monday thru Friday 7:30am-3:30pm.
Also remember to utilize our neighborhood library. The San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) has wonderful activities all year long for our community. The closest branch to West Avenue is the Westfall Branch library located at 6111 Rosedale Court. Their phone number is (210) 207-9220. Go to www.mysapl.org for upcoming events, hours of operation and services and resources.
Come open a book and discover a treasure of information for you and your family!
Library Open House and Technology Playground
Starting in October, I am hosting interested staff, administration and my teachers in the Library for something called Technology Playground. From 3:45pm-4:45pm on different Thursdays of the month, my goal is to bring together different representatives from different departments to come and assist my teachers with questions they need answered.
For example, I had Mrs. Galvin and Mr. Nutt come and field questions regarding technology. Teachers wrote their concerns on Post-It notes as they came into the library and then placed them in categories for Trouble Shooting topics.
We discuss as a whole group the topic that received the most requests for 10 minutes. Then we broke up and went from teacher to teacher to help them with their concern(s). Some may need to work on their teacher webpage, set up their class for SEESAW, need clarification for working in Google Classroom or Google Calendar. They may have questions on how to import pictures or how to download apps to an iPad. It is all set in a VERY relaxed atmosphere where every question is an important question. If its important to my teachers, its important to me. The only rules I have are 1) you cannot read or answer emails and 2) you cannot work on lesson plans.
I also provide a variety of snacks and bottle water to fortify, energize and reward all of their hard work. I was so happy to see so many teachers come the first week. They were also able to earn one hour of Professional Development time. It was a WIN/WIN for everyone! I was also thrilled to have received so many positive comments.
Whether its more technology or not, I hope to have many more Technology Playground gatherings in the coming months for our West Avenue teachers and staff.
Holy Pumpkins, Ms. Nester!
The winners will be announced and Prizes for First, Second and Third place pumpkins will be given on Monday, October 31st. Pumpkins MUST be taken home on Monday, October 31st or they will be discarded.
Library Transformation
Last month, I shared with you information about our changing library. We had a wonderful group of men who have come in and re-arranged some of our shelving. It looks totally different from the way it once looked.
I am hoping to have many more surprises and changes before the end of the year. Please come by to visit from time to time and see what changes are taking place. I will keep you informed here in Library Shenanigans so you stay connected with us.
Read Online With OverDrive!
You can read every day for your own enjoyment and with your children! Download the OverDrive App from the App Store. You can choose to download the NEISD Digital Library or the San Antonio Public Library. For NEISD, you just need your Parent ID or your student's ID number. To check out from the San Antonio Public Library, or "SAPL", you need your library card number (found on the back of your SAPL card). Pick your books, check them out and ENJOY! You don't have to worry about returning your books...its automatically done for you! How can you ask for more? Never pay for overdue books again!
Try it...you'll LOVE it!
I was interview by 4th grade.
She was VERY well prepared, asked great questions about myself and wrote down my answers carefully. She did such a good job and I was even more impressed to see her typed report on the wall by the main office. Congrats, Amada! Well done!
