Poetry: A Language of Its Own

Is poetry the same as English language?

Can we analyze the linguistics of poetry to find its difference from Mainstream English?

Yes we can! If we study the aspect of linguistics at the five different levels - phonetic, phonological, graphological, grammatical, lexico-syntax - then we can determine just how different the language of poetry is from Mainstream American English.

Levels of Linguistic Analysis I Will Use

  • Phonetic - study features and functions of sounds
  • Phonological - study sound patterns, rules of pronunciation, rhyming scheme and utterance of the word in a sentence
  • Grammatical - study and analyze words, internal structure of sentences and their formation, find out foregrounding and deviation, clauses, phrases, words, nouns, and verbs and distinguished
