Happy Thanksgiving!
English
This month we have started our adventure into the Klondike. We’ve spent time exploring what life was like during the 1898 Gold Rush. This is the setting of our latest novel, The Call of the Wild. We are about half way through this detailed masterpiece. Their book and packet should be coming home every night. There is a quiz after each chapter, which is directly linked to their homework packet. We will continue it throughout December and, hopefully, we will wrap the novel up by December break.
Please keep checking Google Classroom for assignments and upcoming events.
Social Studies
We just finished Mesopotamia! We were able to do so much, like go to scribe school, learned the Phoenician alphabet, Babylonian math and more! We even made Mesopotamian bread! Students saw first hand how hard it was to make flour and understood how much work the Mesopotamians did in order to get a simple and basic food! We talked about the origins of Thanksgiving and how there are ancient celebrations similar to our holiday! Great participation from all students! We will be starting a unit on the Ancient Israelites when we return to school. Students received their test scores and I was pleased with the averages. All grades are posted on Aspen. Please keep up to date on google classroom. Email me with any questions! Happy Thanksgiving!
Reading
We will finish our Robin Hood unit this week. Up next, we will look at the short story “The Greatest Gift” by Philip Van Doren Stern. This short story was the inspiration behind Frank Capra’s movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Students will become familiar with the characters in preparation for our December 1st field trip to Massasoit College to see their rendition of this classic story. In December, we will spend some time analyzing the ideas and characters behind Charles Dickens famous story, “A Christmas Carol.” This unit will include a quiz or two on comprehension and vocabulary, as well as answering some higher order thinking questions.
Please continue to check Google Classroom and Aspen.
I hope you have an enjoyable Thanksgiving!
Science
The Science Fair has come to an end! I am so extremely proud of all the students for their hard work and sincere effort in completing this long-term, multi-step project. I would like to thank all of the valued people who supported the students, in school and at home, throughout this endeavor. The top 10 finalists, as chosen by a team of teacher and National Honor Society student judges were: Will DeLuca, Shelby Laime, Avery Hohengasser, Isabella D’Agostino, Lexi Levine, Dylan Yee, Curt Heath, and Ryan McGrath! Congratulations to everyone!
In class, we have been busily reviewing for our first Unit Test - which will be given right after Thanksgiving break. The students have worked through 12 hands-on lab stations, experimented with dirt, sand, pebbles, rocks, and lots of water. The spills were unavoidable, but the fun was abundant! We have completed our weathering and erosion review sheet, as well as task cards to make sure that we are ready for this test!
Next on the agenda will be some thought-provoking discussions and learning about human impact on the environment. We will discuss the importance of fresh water, air, fossil fuels, plants, and animals. Please continue to check Google Classroom for updates, assignments, and other information!
