Triton Times
Eastlake Middle School 11.13.2018
It has certainly been an action-packed week at ELM. Our sports teams did well in their championship games and we participated in amazing science and engineering opportunities. Check out the action below! Next week, we honor our vets. We can't wait to celebrate them. Items to consider for this week:
Veteran's Day! We will celebrate our Vets on Wednesday, November 14. If you are a vet or current military personnel, we invite you to stop by the front gates before school. You will have special access to the front circle. Enjoy donuts, coffee and a bunch of awesome staff members appreciating you! We sent a note home with the students of military families with a small pass to let you in the loop. Come out and let us say thank you!
Coffee with the Principal. There is no Coffee with the Principal November 13th. We will have another one on December 11th, but please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns
As always, Go Tritons! If you have something that you would like me to share in the Triton Times, please let me know.
Thank Our Vets!
The following is an excerpt from a letter I sent to our military families. Having been raised in a military family, I am appreciative of the sacrifices that our military families make every day to ensure our freedom. We are here to support all families!
Letter to a Veteran Family
Dear Military Family Member:
On behalf of Eastlake Middle School, I want to thank you personally for your dedication and service to our country on this Veteran’s Day. Whether you are active duty, retired or a spouse, your sacrifices are acknowledged and appreciated by our community. We would like to celebrate you (or spouse) on November, 14th. In this envelope is a purple placard that will give you access to the inner loop in front of the school. We would like to serve you donuts and coffee. Please pass by between 7:30 and 8:15 AM. Or come to the front office during the day. For planning purposes, kindly confirm with the link of the website or email Dr. Cooke. In addition, we are asking that you send an email to Dr. Cooke with a digital picture of you in uniform as well as listing your military branch and rank. We would like to make a video for our students and display our support for our military families.
My dad served for 20 years in the Coast Guard and I could not be more proud of his dedication as well as yours. I know firsthand the opportunities and challenges of the military life and we are here to help in any way possible. Starting next school year, we will be starting the process of implementing our military grant to support a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiative. We will send more information out shortly, and we want you to be a part of the planning process. We will be hosting a military night soon to outline the grant. We hope you will attend. I echo the following sentiments about the military said by former presidents:
"We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was. Most of all, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause." ~ Ronald Reagan
“I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man {or woman} who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy {or any military branch}.” ~ John F. Kennedy
With Respect and Gratitude,
Ricardo Cooke

Gratitude (Triton Trait of the Month!)
For the months of November & December we will be focusing on Gratitude, or appreciating what you are given.
When you feel gratitude, you feel a sense of abundance. When you express gratitude—especially when it’s heartfelt—you strengthen your relationships with others. Grateful people are happier and more fulfilled. And gratitude leads you to be nicer to other people: more cooperative, patient, and trusting.
For the months of November & December, we encourage gratitude in others. You can model it for others by talking about the good things that happen to you and reframing difficulties by highlighting positive aspects.
"I love this absolutely stunning sunset!"
"This week has been really challenging and stressful, but I am grateful to have support coworkers."
Be sure to celebrate gratitude as well. Consider dropping quick thank you notes on desks (for both students and fellow staff members). And be sure to nominate students for Triton of the Week who exemplify the Triton Trait of the Month: Gratitude

A Message from our Assistant Principals!
Dr. Chamberlin and Mr. Nafarrete
Parents and Guardians: Please limit lunch drop-offs to your student only and please be prepared to wait for your student to get to the front office. It's difficult to monitor the food when it is dropped off and still attend to job duties. Also, we advise you to monitor your students' bike gear and talk to them about safety. Many are not wearing helmets. We have also advised students about riding safely in the neighborhood especially before and after school. Also, as drivers, please be mindful of traffic regulations especially making the illegal u-turn in front of the school. Thanks again for your support!
