Weekly Message from the Founder of ALL THINGS EQ (Danna Evans):
Our final motto for this school year is:
I learn more by truly listening to others.
We all know that listening is an essential part of strong conversation and learning skills. However, finding ways to help our children develop those skills can be tricky. Summertime provides opportunities to help your children strengthen their conversation skills because there are more visits with extended family members and friends. When people visit, ask your kids to practice their listening skills with Learn 3 Things & Tell 3 Things.
This simple but effective tool can help your child feel more confident when interacting with others. I started asking my children to do this because I once had a relative complain to me about how kids today (which meant my kids) spend too much time on their phones and don't interact with others. I was slightly frustrated by the comment because I had given my children permission to go on their phones only after they had done a solid hour of visiting with their relatives.
Then it hit me; their "visiting" was really just a quiet physical presence. They were present but not engaged. So, the next time we visited family, I asked my kids to share three things with each relative and to learn three things about each relative. Not only did this provide them with an easy frame to follow, but it also helped them to build better relationships with the people we care about.
Wishing you all a wonderful summer!
