Track and Field

Grade Six Physical Education Unit

Throwing, Jumping, Running, and FUN!

Next month your child will be participating in a Track and Field unit in their physical education class. We will be working towards a Track and Field day where their skills will be showcased in a series of Track and Field events!

Why is Physical Education Important?

As you may already know, physical education is part of every school day. This is because we strive to promote a healthy lifestyle for each student and teach them how to include physical activity in their daily lives.

Some benefits of daily physical activity include:

- increased body awareness and movement skills

- improved concentration in other classes

- helps maintain a healthy weight

- boosts students moods

- combats health conditions and diseases

- boosts energy

Which activities will be done in class?

Getting Active at Home

Physical activity is important outside of school, too. Children should be getting at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day. Here are some fun games to get your child moving at home.

1) Hallway bowling - Fill up water bottles and use any ball you have to knock them down.

2) Sock Skating – If you have hard floors, put on socks and skate around. See if you can do spins or hockey stops, or who can slide the farthest. Make sure to move the furniture and watch for splinters.

Remember you can always take advantage of playgrounds in your neighbourhood, too!
