Weekly Junior High Update
May 10, 2019
Thank you!!!
As the year comes to a close, we would like to the send a huge thank you to all of our families!! Thank you for supporting all of our teachers throughout the year. Thank you for all the donations and goodies you’ve sent in throughout the year and for Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you for your kind words, your encouraging emails, your smiles and your offers of help. Thank you for being your scholar’s biggest champion, for holding your scholar accountable, for encouraging them, for pushing them, for celebrating their successes, and most of all for allowing them to grow and learn from their failures. This year our goal was to develop a Culture of Perseverance within every scholar and staff member.
Perseverance is defined as “persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success”. It is very rare in life to experience success the first time out of the gate or every single time we take a risk. In today’s culture, to often we see people give up the moment something doesn’t go their way. This year, we absolutely all persevered! We all felt struggles, we all experienced failure, and those experiences are never pleasant. However, through those struggles, challenges, and failures we have seen our scholars and staff personify the definition of perseverance. Thank you for allowing your scholar to struggle, to fall from time to time, because only through those challenges, were our scholars able to grow, learn, and develop the understanding that they could accomplish anything they are willing to put the time, effort, and energy into accomplishing - even if they don’t experience the success the first time. We could not be prouder of all our scholars accomplished this year and thank you for being a crucial part of the wonderful OI family we have created!!!
End-of-Year Performances
This week our scholars will kick off our final performances of the school year. All scholars have worked so hard this year and we are very excited to see their final shows. We look forward to seeing our families and closing out the year showcasing our scholars’ talents!
Choir: Monday, 5/13 6:00-8:00 (Grade levels will switch in and out throughout the show and come together for a final group performance at the end. Please plan on staying for the entire performance.)
Band & Strings: Wednesday, 5/15 6:00-8:00
Theater II: Monday, Monday, 5/20 6:00-8:00
Design Cycle
In 6th grade Leadership, scholars used the design cycle to create a board game. Scholars then tested their game and made final adjustments based on feedback received. Once they had their final product, scholars presented their board game to the “Shark Tank”, a group of their peers.
Raising Awareness
In 7th Grade I&S we are learning about how technology affects our identities and relationships. In Mrs. Nowbath's class scholars have been researching to explore how social media can be used to create positive change. Each scholars has chose a global issue and used computers to research and create a 'fakebook' page to raise awareness about the issue and educate other about possible solutions to the problem.
Science in Action
8th grade scholars tested 5 synthetic blood samples to identify the ABO and Rh blood types. The simulated agglutination reactions were extremely realistic. Scholars then used evidence from the collected data to identify the best match for a blood transfusion.
