The Riverwalk Roar
February 9, 2020
Note from Dr. Compton
Lions,
I'd like to start out by recognizing each of you and how well each of you responded to this past week's events. What impressed me most was the way each showed your public support for Riverwalk Academy. I've shared this before, but here are the staff norms that the staff and I worked on and adopted shortly after I arrived at Riverwalk Academy:
- We will be supportive of the individual ideas and needs of our colleagues, students, and their families.
- We will show respect by listening to each other, being mindful of each other's time and space, and seeking to understand the varied opinions and needs in our community.
- We will be flexible in meeting the needs of our students, colleagues, and school community.
- We will uphold a positive mindset when interacting with our colleagues, students, and the Riverwalk Academy Community.
- We will show passion in our words, our work, our interactions, and our pursuit of excellence for our students.
- We will show integrity by being honest and open with our parents, students, and colleagues in accordance with ethics and best practices.
- We will have effective communication by understanding differences, being inclusive, and conveying a clear and respectful message.
When I think about the way most of you respond this past week, it's your supportive and positive mindset that jumps out. It would have been easy to jump on social media and spew your opinion about why you thought it was a ridiculous decision that the school stayed open on Friday OR to hop on and bash the school for waiting until 10:40 am to send out the cancellation notice when Clover sent out their call at 10:00 am. Instead, most of you took the high road and took to social media to stand up for your Pride. You have no idea how your positive actions and support this week helped boost the morale of the staff, which, in return, improves the quality of teaching and learning. I was talking with Ms. Goedhart last week and I told her that it was collectively, the Pride, that makes Riverwalk Academy an incredible school to be a part of. Last week was Ms. Goedhart's first week and we chatted briefly on Friday. She saw first hand how wonderful our Pride is. For this, I thank you!
Let's have a great 4 day week and remember, per our school calendar, there is no school on Friday (14th) or on Monday (17th).
