Newsletter 1, Week 1 Term 1

Waiau School ⎪ 2nd February 2023

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Nau mai, hoki mai and welcome back to Term 1.

We hope you have all had a great summer break and are looking forward to a busy Term 1!

The staff have been busy preparing our learning spaces ready for 2023 and the feedback from the students has been positive.

We have a new staff member in Room 1 for Term 1.

We are very fortunate to have Mrs Rhonda Faulks teaching on Mondays and Tuesdays and Megan will teach Wednesday - Friday. Make sure you give her a warm welcome to Waiau School when you see her at school.

Cath will be the Room 2 teacher for the first term and she will head off to Wainui camp with our senior students and a group of keen camp parents in next week.

We are currently advertising for our permanent Room 1 Teacher and all going to plan this position will start Term 2.

This weekend sees the local Waiau Fire Brigade celebrate 75 years of volunteering in our community. I hope you are able to take part in the festivities on Saturday as there are lots of exciting events happening on our school grounds.

We are very grateful to our community for getting things actioned. A recent example of this 'can do' approach was Billy sourcing the new sand and Hamish along with his team, putting in the people power to sort out and prepare the sandpit ready for day one. It is a very popular play area and now we have loads of sand our students can dig far more intricate tunnels and open cast mines.

He waka eke noa- we are all in this together.

Ngā mihi nui,

Megan

Waitangi Day

Just a reminder that school is closed on Monday for Waitangi Day. Enjoy your long weekend!

Swimming Term 1

We have started swimming lessons with Caroline this week- please ensure swimming gear is sent along rain, hail or shine.

Our Swimming Sports Date has been set for Tuesday, 28 February, 1pm. Please lock this date in your calendar. Family and friends are welcome to come along and support the progress of our swimmers.

Parents Relay- If you wish to swim 1 length of freestyle in the parents’ relay teams, please let Liv know. (4 parents per team.) If weather is unsuitable we will contact you via email, app and Facebook.

Sun screen- please make sure your child has a good covering of sunscreen applied before they come to school each day. February weather is always tropical up here in Waiau and we want our tamariki to be protected. We have lotion available so they can reapply it at lunchtime.

Room 2 Camp

Our Room 2 camp is back at Wainui on Banks Peninsula, leaving Tuesday 7th February and returning Friday 10th February. Our camp parents are Clint, Dan, Biddy, Anna and Henry. It is fantastic to have so many parents keen to come and thank you for giving up your time to come with us.

This is an amazing experience for our tamariki to experience. Activities on this camp include Kayaking, Coasteering, Snorkelling, Search & Rescue and more! We will be posting updates and sharing photos on facebook.

Final camp information will come home on Friday. Invoices for parent contribution to camp have been emailed out.
