Dear Boyden Families,

A huge thank you to the Boyden PAC for spoiling everyone this week for Teacher Appreciation Week. It was amazing and we all enjoyed the special acknowledgement each day.

Happy Mother's Day to all the Boyden moms!

Have a great weekend!

What are the Students Learning in Media/STEM?

Have you heard the buzz about Pebble Go? Boyden recently became a member of the Massachusetts Library System and has access to a variety of age-appropriate databases. They are wonderful resources that encourage our students’ curiosity and expose them to informational texts. Pebble Go is quickly becoming a favorite of students and staff. Students in grades K-1 explored what it means to be curious and how to find information. Then, they researched some of their favorite topics. Grade 2 used Pebble Go as a source of information for their country projects. Grade 3 researched animals for an animal project.

March Madness and the NBA Playoffs have infiltrated the media center! Grades 4-5 enjoyed Basketball Belles, a story about the first-ever women’s collegiate basketball game. Students then designed, built, and tested their own basketball hoops.

It’s hard to believe but our last book checkout will be the week of May 22nd. Please encourage your students to find and return any media center materials after that date. Thank you.

What are the Students Learning in Art?

Thank you for supporting the Art program here at Boyden and for visiting the Walpole Town Library to see the work of many of our students and students from all the schools in the district. The show will continue until the end of May. Please stop by if you haven’t already and enjoy their beautiful artwork.

In the Art room these last few weeks, the Kindergarten classes, as well as the First and Second Graders, have been doing a comprehensive unit on Printing. Some of the students have collected found objects from nature and are printing using them. Others are learning about incising on styrofoam, some are using gel plates for mono printing, and the rest practicing stencil printing, and stamp printing. It’s great to see the enthusiasm as they are able to “pull their print” and repeat and duplicate the images and shapes.

Our Third Grade students are working diligently on figure drawing and gestures. They are imagining having a “superpower” and will draw themselves using the information they have learned practicing gestures. They will use colored pencils and markers to complete their figures. When everyone is finished they will be compiled and organized in a quilt format.

After an intensive unit on Stop Motion Animation, the Fourth Graders will get a chance to sculpt with clay. The emphasis will be on building with a slab. They will be Bisque fired and then the students will have the opportunity to glaze them.

The Fifth Graders are nearing completion of their autobiographical, radial design lesson that they have been working on with our student teacher from Boston University, Ms. Cames. They are using symbols to tell their story of the last six years. The media is thin, lightweight paper with Sharpies and Watercolor. We hope to have a chance to display these in the building before the year is through. They are doing beautiful work!

The 5th-grade class clay tiles are completed and mounted on wood. They came out wonderfully. Installation should be done in the next week so that they will have a chance to enjoy them in the hallways.

As always, thank you very much for your support of the ARTS!!
