Languages Background Survey
St Benedicts is proud to welcome families from many different backgrounds. The Diocese of Wollongong, in recognition of the increasing numbers of new arrivals in many of our schools, has introduced a Language Background Survey as part of our Literacy Policy. This survey aims to understand how many students are lucky enough to speak, or understand, another language. Bilingualism has long been recognised as having many benefits for students, such as increased cognitive reflexes, greater global understanding of the world, and improved employment prospects. With this in mind, St Benedicts will undertake the survey this term. Many Primary Schools have already undertaken the survey and have used the data to provide effective and targeted classroom support. All K-11 students will undertake (have undertaken) the survey and we will collate the results. I look forward to reporting back to you once this process is completed.
HSC Special Provisions
Disability provisions for the Higher School Certificate are designed to assist students who couldn't otherwise make a fair attempt to show what they know in an exam room.
A formal application has to be made to apply for provisions, which will be determined by NESA. Provisions are granted solely by how the students exam performance is affected.
Students who think they may be eligible are encouraged to click on the link below for more information. Students will also need to contact Mrs Keedle as soon as possible, as formal applications need to be submitted by the end of Term 1.

YEAR 11 STUDENTS CAN APPLY FOR THE NYSF 2020 YEAR 12 PROGRAM
APPLICATIONS OPEN 1 MARCH -31 MAY
Do you have students in Year 11 interested in STEM subjects?
Year 11 students are invited to apply for the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Year 12 Program, to be held in January 2020
The NYSF Year 12 Program is a 12-day residential program designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage continued studies in these fields.
In 2020, there will be 600 places available across three sessions. While at the program students will:
- live on campus at one of our host universities (Australian National University or University of Queensland);
- tour science and technology labs and sites to experience facilities and learn about research being conducted;
- engage with industry partners and research providers;
- learn about university and STEM career pathways;
- mix with other like-minded students from all over Australia; and
- network with former NYSF participants to further increase understanding of STEM related study and career experiences.
There may be opportunities for students to cover part or all of the cost through community fundraising, sponsorship, or contributions from an endorsing Rotary Club. We encourage students to explore all of these options.
Dates and locations
In 2020, three sessions of the NYSF Year 12 Program will run with approx 200 spaces available at each.
Dates for the three sessions are:
- Session A – Canberra, The Australian National University, Wed 1 – Sun 12 January 2020
- Session B – Brisbane, The University of Queensland, Wed 8 – Sun 19 January 2020
- Session C – Canberra, The Australian National University, Wed 15 – Sun 26 January 2020
Application process
Students applying for NYSF 2020 are required to submit an application through the NYSF website. Rotary Clubs can also be contacted to support students with their applications. – Read more at www.nysf.edu.au.
