What is Poverty?

Poverty is about not having enough money to meet basic needs including food, clothing and shelter. However, poverty is more, much more than just not having enough money. Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time.

What are people doing to stop poverty?

With a quality education, children will get the knowledge and life skills they need to realize their full potential. Education is essential in creating change in a child’s life. People help by training teachers, building new schools and breaking down obstacles that prevent many children from attending school. Access to health care is essential. People are helping communities build health clinics, train health care workers and invest in equipment and medicine so children can grow up healthy and strong.

Water and sanitation are essential for every child’s survival. Every year, Plan helps communities build school latrines, community water points and helps to establish organizations to ensure the continued management and maintenance of water points.

How can you help to prevent poverty?

You can donate to the salvation army and Save the children to help take away poverty. They're planning to eradicate poverty and help everyone to live a good healthy life.
