PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Dear Arleta Families & Caregivers,
It’s been another good and busy week at Arleta! One thing our staff is excited about and will be focused on with students in May is that it’s Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage month. Each class has chosen an important individual who identifies as Asian American or Pacific Islander to learn about, and after some weeks of learning, classes will create a display on their door of writing, art or whatever else has felt most meaningful, to showcase their learning. At the end of the month our whole school will go on a gallery walk and eat a special treat. Here are some of the people students will be learning about: Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, Yayoi Kusama, Ashima Shiraishi, Kamala Harris, Thanhha Lai, Bao Phi, Moana, Bruce Lee, Seiji Ozawa, Tae Keller, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, George Takei, Minh Lê.
Next week is Staff Appreciation Week and I thought I’d mention my appreciation for our incredible Arleta Staff. Every day, so many times per day, I see, hear and feel ways our staff is caring for children, planning for excellent and fun lessons and activities, and collaborating for children’s growth, success and happiness. There’s always something meaningful and important happening in classrooms and our various school team meetings. Two quick examples I saw today… this morning Ms. William’s class was learning about sarcasm and how to be sure the things we say are kind. That even if we think we’re being funny, if we’re commenting on something that is challenging or sensitive for someone else, it isn’t funny and we don’t say it. Across the breezeway, 4th and 5th graders were learning to locate and interpret information in texts and write an opinion about it. A student told me her opinion is that the patriots should not be taxed because they deserve to eat without having to pay.
I’m also constantly touched as I see, hear and feel you- our amazing community- supporting your children and our staff in the many ways you do. You greet us with your care and smiles, share with us about your child’s strengths and needs, help us problem solve things children do, you support and volunteer in so many different and supportive ways, you help us fund things, beautify our grounds… and you trust us with your children. Thank you so much for being such a caring, spirited and amazing parent and caregiver community. By the way, when it comes to staff appreciation, please know that the gift of notes and pictures drawn by kids are every teacher’s favorite thing.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Lisa
NEW! MAY IS ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH (APAHM)
Since 1990, the U.S. government has designated the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, celebrating the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May was chosen to mark the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the United States on May 7, 1843, as well as the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869.

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I will be delivering counseling lessons to grades 3-5 that focus on what mental health is, when and how to seek support, as well as social media literacy. With the growth of mental health awareness widely circulating on platforms like Tik Tok, Instagram, and Snapchat, it is important to encourage students to critically analyze the content they are consuming and to seek professional help if they are needing more support. Please be aware that these conversations may bring up big feelings for students, and I will plan to provide safe spaces to support them. I encourage you to have conversations with your child throughout the month to discover what they are learning and provide another safe space to discuss these topics. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
