Professional Growth
- Friends and mentors - Nothing can replace 1:1 face-to-face conversations with people who push my thinking, challenge me to grow, and serve as thought partners for me.
- Professional Organizations - I am a member of a variety of professional organizations that help me grow as a leader. Most of these organizations provide some sort of monthly print or digital content (journal, newsletter, etc.) as well as recommendations for professional books. Here are a few that I have joined: Learning Forward, ACSA, AASA, ASCD
- Professional books - As an avid reader, I always try to have one professional book that I am reading (along with other fiction books!). I recently finished Katie Martin's Learner-Centered Innovation. I've known Katie for years and I love her passion for student and adult learning! I'm now reading Relentless: Changing Lives by Disrupting The Educational Norm by Hamish Brewer. He is one of the keynote speakers at this year's SDCOE Equity Symposium.
- Twitter - As you may know, I am a huge proponent of Twitter for professional learning, growth, and connection. There are so many educators on Twitter, sharing what works and what doesn't work for their students, sharing leadership challenges, and supporting one another. Here are a few people I love to follow: @gcouros @burgess_shelley @ACSA_info @AASAHQ Here are a few hashtags I like to follow: #eusdtweets #LeadLAP #educoach
- Blogs - I am always looking for new blogs to follow. I like to read blogs because they are usually short, they are often written by practitioners doing the work every day, and they inspire me with new ideas and connect me with other ways of thinking. Here are a few of my favorite education-related blogs:
The Principal of Change by George Couros
Informed by Research, Inspired by Practice by Katie Martin
Erin Sheninger has a number of books, articles, and blog posts
Lead Like a Pirate by Shelley Burgess and Beth Houf
- Bonus suggestion! I love listening to podcasts on my commute to and from work each day. Usually, I pick podcasts that have nothing to do with education, though there are many amazing education podcasts out there. My new favorite podcast is called 10 Things to Tell You. I love the thoughtful way the podcaster (is that a job title now?) poses reflective questions and makes me want to connect with other people in my life to discuss each topic.
