Weekly Updates for the week of February 1st

What's Happening This Week

Global Play Day: Our school is participating in Global Play Day on Wednesday, February 3rd. I am asking students to bring in board games, card games and toys. We will be going electronic's free that day. Students will not be using iPads or other electronic devices. Read below for more information!

Writer's Workshop:

The students are still working persuasive letters. This week we will be working on editing/revising our letters and publishing our letters to you.

Reader's Workshop:

We have started our Biography Unit. We will be working on how to summarize information. We will also review main idea and supporting details. The students are reading their "Who is/was" books. This week we will talk about how to take notes on what we are reading.

Math Workshop:

This weeks skills will include fractions of a set, location fractions on a number line, multiples, and equivalent fractions.

**Multiplication facts will be important to this unit, especially when we start talking about equivalent fractions, finding common denominators, and when simplifying fractions.

Science:

We will be discussing "How does sound move?" We will begin discussing "What is light?"

Global Play Day

Next Wednesday, February 3rd, is Global School Play Day. Visit the following website for more detailed information, including an intro video: http://www.globalschoolplayday.com/ Today in class we began categorizing the different types of games that we enjoy playing and the students came up with an impressive list.

Last year our school participated for the first time by setting aside one hour during the day for the students to PLAY, electronic-free! This year our school has decided to set aside the entire school day for PLAY. After all, it is Global School Play DAY.

I plan to break our day into segments, each with its own theme so that throughout the day the students have an opportunity to participate in a variety of PLAY.

Students have been asked to bring in board games, card games, and toys. They should be school appropriate and okay for all students to use.
