Kindergarten and 1st Grade
Kindergarten and First Grade have been studying high vs. low sounds. First grade made melody brochures demonstrating their knowledge of sounds that are high and low. This collaborates with their science lesson on what causes sound which is vibration.
2nd Graders are creating sound stories.

Physical Education with Mr. B
All grade levels have recently been introduced to the new game of "Table Ball", which is a combination of 4 Square and Ping Pong. It can be played 1 vs 1 or even 2 vs 2. Table Ball helps students work on their hand eye coordination, agility, and communication skills.

Johnson is Trustworthy
Our character trait for the entire school in February is TRUSTWORTHY.
The artwork on the right is from our Johnson calendar. This image was created last year by Dominic Mills and Jackson Baioni.
Here is the definition of trustworthy that we use at Johnson:
“Trustworthy people are reliable and dependable. They do what they say they are going to do. If someone is trustworthy that means they are honest and forthright, and they don't cheat. You can tell your trustworthy friend your worries and know what he or she will not make fun of you, or tell anyone else what you are worried about. A trustworthy person rarely lets you down."

WATCH D.O.G.S.® is an innovative program being used by schools across America to help students thrive and grow. Watch D.O.G.S. asks fathers and father figures to take off one day of work a year in order to make a difference in the lives of children. Research shows that a male presence in schools reduces bullying and improves academic outcomes for students. Our volunteers will participate in classroom activities, ensure safety on Johnson's campus, participate in recess and lunch monitoring, and maintain a strong, positive presence for students. This new program has just been launched at Johnson, and we appreciate your support!

How can we communicate our ideas in art? Beginning with symbols in our world and our lives, third graders created symbolic self-portraits, and then moved into considering the many different categories of art. We discussed realistic, abstract, and non-objective, and how all can be used to communicate a message in different ways. Students are currently creating a piece of art inspired by one of these styles, selecting a design that they would want to keep forever. What message would you send, if it was to be kept forever?

Students have been adding to their digital portfolios on Artsonia. Parents - you can easily add relatives' email addresses into your child's account, and then they will be notified when new artwork is posted for viewing. It's a great way to share students' creativity with family members that live far away! You should receive an email and/or paper sent home with information to get started! (Their account keeps artwork from year to year, allowing you to see their visual art skills develop over time.) Visit Johnson's Gallery to see all of our amazing artworks.
Library with Mrs. Zimmerman
In February, we have begun our One Book, One School program. The entire school will be participating in the same read aloud. We will be reading Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. This is a 2010 Newberry Honor book. Each teacher reads aloud a couple of chapters a day to their classes, and on Tuesday and Thursday classes answer trivia questions.
Mrs. Perkin’s class participated in a puzzle event where they experienced similar situations to Minli, the main character in Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. Students had a lot of fun and will be able to make connections as they read!
Coming soon to 3rd Grade...
Author N.D. Wilson will be visiting with third graders on April 21st!
We are so grateful for the technology grant that was funded by the PTO. Teachers are already checking out robots to use with their classes!
