Dr. Bernia to host Community Conversations

Since joining the District in October 2022, Dr. Bernia has been hard at work connecting with stakeholders in our school buildings including staff and students. The next step in his process is to get out into the community and connect with families and community members. Dates, times and locations for the upcoming Community Conversations are listed below:


  • February 9 at the Commerce Township Library from 2-3pm
  • February 16 at the Wixom Public Library from 2-3pm
  • March 1 at the Walled Lake City Library from 6-7pm


We hope everyone in the community will be able to attend and meet Dr. Bernia, share thoughts about the District, and learn more about his vision for the District moving forward. We hope to see you there!

District to host Community Engagement Sessions with Plante Moran CRESA

During the January Board of Education, the Board approved District administration to embark on a facility utilization study in 2023. The District has partnered with Plante Moran CRESA (PMC) to facilitate the study. As part of their process, PMC will be hosting three community engagement sessions with stakeholders from across the District during the month of February. These sessions will be hosted in our high school on the dates and times listed below:


  • WL Central High School – February 13 – 6:30pm in the auditorium
  • WL Northern High School – February 15 – 6:30pm in the media center
  • WL Western High School – February 28 – 6:30pm in the media center


The District encourages families, students, staff and community members to attend these session and share their feedback.

Nomination Information!

Graduate Spotlight Nomination form

If you know of an alumni of WLCSD who could be highlighted in the WLCSD Learning Newsletter Graduate Spotlight section, please forward this form to them or contact pamelacole@wlcsd.org with questions. The nominated student should be a 2016 graduate or before.

WLCSD Staff Shoutout Nomination Form

In an effort to find additional ways to celebrate our staff, the WLCSD Community Relations department requests that families fill out the information below for staff who are rock stars in their classrooms and school communities. Please complete the form below and contact Dan Durkin (danieldurkin@wlcsd.org) with any questions you may have.

Shining Star nominations accepted until April 6

The Shining Star Award recognizes an outstanding individual who has supported the special needs community within Walled Lake Schools. Some of the qualities of the nominee might include: a positive attitude, dedication, dependability, self-motivation, helpfulness, etc. Nominees can be anyone associated with the special needs community: teacher, para, bus driver, aide, parent, volunteer, etc.. Nominations accepted via this google form only.

Walled Lake Athletes Committing to Play at the College Level

Year-end presents a great opportunity to celebrate our top senior student athletes and their opportunity to continue their athletic careers in college.


Please provide the following information on SENIOR athletes that have either:

- received a scholarship to play college athletics

- have a spot guaranteed to them on a college roster as a "preferred walk-on."


The information will be used by each school to plan their signing days and will also be printed in the LEARNING newsletter (if approved.)

Laurel Rachiele receives Golden Apple Award

Laurel Rachiele is principal’s secretary at Walnut Creek Middle School. Laurel was nominated by Tracy Jackson, English teacher at Creek, because Laurel infuses energy, respect and a can-do attitude into every aspect of her job.

Jacob Martin receives Golden Apple Award

Jacob Martin is the daytime custodian at Wixom Elementary. Jacob was nominated by Cassey Marshall, Wixom 3rd grade teacher and her 27 third graders because Jacob is a crucial part of the building's success, which means he is essential to the students' success. Jacob always has a smile on his face, has a strong work ethic, and overall radiates positivity.

In addition to receiving phone calls and email notifications from the school district in the event of a school closing or emergency, parents can also sign up to receive SMS Text messages.
