Principal's Corner
Dear Parents/Guardians:
School Dress
As the weather finally begins to warm up, it is important to remind your child to dress appropriately for school. We should not be able to view your child’s mid-section or other private areas. If a staff member feels uncomfortable with a child’s clothing, he/she will ask the student to change into their school PE uniform.
Uncle Pete’s Lunch
I am astonished and proud of Emerson's students, staff and parents' response to my challenge of bringing in sack lunches to feed the poor.
On Tues., April 17th, we collected 694 sack dinners for those in need. It was an amazing effort by Emerson’s students and staff.
A special thank you goes to Ms. Warneke for coordinating the collection, to Ms. Arnold for facilitating the Student Government Association sack making, as well as Ms. Pottinger, Mr. Kennedy and Ms. Hrobsky for assisting the students in making the lunches after school. Also, thank you to Emerson’s PTO who donated enough food to make 185 lunches.
The sacks were taken to:
-St. Martin DePorres Food Pantry, 5112 W Washington, Chicago, serving the needs of the surrounding community.
-Franciscan Day Program, 10 S Kedzie, Chicago, serving the homeless in need of services.
-Our Lady of Angels Food Pantry and outreach programs, 824 N Hamlin, Chicago, serving the needs of the surrounding community, including youth, seniors, and homeless.
-Cornerstone Community Center, 4628 N. Clifton, Chicago, serving meals in uptown to the needy.
-House of the Good Shepherd, 1114 W Grace, Chicago, serving women and children affected by domestic violence.
-Madonna House, 1114 W Grace, Chicago, a shelter, serving homeless women and children.
-Marillac Center Food Pantry, 2859 W. Jackson, Chicago, serving the needs of the surrounding community.
-Marillac Center Project Hope, 2859 W. Jackson, Chicago, serving new mothers with skills for raising children.
-Deborah’s Place, 2822 W Jackson, Chicago, working to break the cycle of homelessness for women providing housing and comprehensive services.
-St. Sylvester Food Pantry, 2157 N Humboldt, Chicago, serving the needs of the surrounding community.
MAP Testing
During the week of May 7th, all students will be participating in the spring MAP test. They will be tested on their math and reading skills. These tests are very important, as we use the scores to identify student growth and student placement for the coming school year. We will be sending 8th grade students’ scores to their respective high school for their placement as well. Please remind your child to take these tests seriously and encourage them to do their best.
Constitution Test
On Tue., May 22, 2018, the entire 7th grade will take the Constitution Test, which will be administered by their homeroom teacher. Seventh grade social studies teachers and students have been working very hard during the past month to prepare for this assessment. Please take time to work with your child as he/she prepares for this test. You can check your child’s social studies teacher’s webpage for further information and resources.
Registration
Registration for the 2018-2019 school year has opened. We are requesting parents register their children as soon as possible, which will allow us to plan for the coming school year. You should have received an InfoSnap code to begin the process. Just a reminder, your child will not be placed on a team or scheduled into classes until you have registered through InfoSnap. Please make sure you register by June 1, 2018.
Last Day of School
Thurs., May 31, 2018, is the official last day of attendance for students. Fri., June 1, 2018, is a records planning day for District 64 staff.
