Bring on the New Year!
I have decided to not make promises to myself that I will not keep. I have decided to start with one goal and only one goal that I really, really need to do and to not go hog wild and try to be the Gestapo about that one goal, instead I am going to relax and try my best to make this goal into a habit that I can consistently live with each day. So, of course, the first thing that I need to do is bring the weight under control. I have probably been bringing my weight "under control" for over 40 years! That is just me and my type of body and the metabolism that I have pretty much destroyed from years of "watching" my food. I decided to start this new goal of keeping my weight under control with a tiny book that I write in each day about what I am grateful for. So, you may be asking how is that going to help you get your weight under control? Well, I am starting with my mind and getting myself in the right place to appreciate what I do have, who I am and what I represent. Many times we are not ready to put in place the promises that we make ourselves at the beginning of a new year. We work really hard at whatever we think we need to do to "get better" and forget to make sure that our foundation is solid and that our mind is in the right place to take that new goal and make it into a daily habit.
In addition to the book that I write in every day about what I am grateful for I also have a book that allows me to write in a goal for each month and how I will get to that goal. I know when I look at the goal I am working toward that it is not a habit yet, so I need to remember to live my life while working toward my goal instead of making my goal the only thing that I think about and get all wrapped up in doing! I think forgetting to have a life is the one thing that destroys most of the goals we start each new year.
Life is messy and there will be days you will not exercise, eat right, drink half your weight in water, or whatever you are trying to do and for many of us after we mess up a couple of times we just give up the goal and revert back to our old habits. This is what I don't want to do this year. So, forgiveness will be a big part of each day and remembering my goal will be the other part of each day.
This post has nothing to do with school but it does have to do with mindset and as a teacher you influence many people! When you feel good about your life the kids will also feel good about their life which in turn means they will learn better!
To a great new year!
Cindy
P.S. Below is a flow chart on standards-based grading. I have been looking at this and thought this matches perfectly to what I have been talking about in relation to our goals. We learn new skills to help us get to our goal, we make mistakes, we think about the mistakes and find new ways to do better and then we might need to ask for help such as a friend to be our sounding board but in the end, we just keep practicing until we master our goal! I guess we need to do what we ask the kids to do!
Thank you to all the teachers that helped plan, put together and deliver the awesome technology sessions for our inservice last Friday! Thank you to Casye Guyette, Wendy Hill, Crystal Williams, Nakia Powell, Melinda Ferrante, Renee Spiker, Morgan Robbins, Leah Cook, Ann Marie McCalla, Carrie Moore, and Jennifer Boren
We will start walkthroughs and evaluations for the second semester the last week of January!

Minutes to Win It!
Most of us want to start off the new year with resolutions that foster a healthier lifestyle. Collierville Schools is partnering with the Collierville YMCA to hold a “Minutes to Win It” Wellness Challenge to help get us started. The program starts January 7th and runs through March 8th (9 weeks). You will find the attached flyer with information on how to participate. The flyer will also be posted in the teachers’ lounge, workroom, and by the sign-in sheets. You do NOT need to be a member of the YMCA to participate. People that already do Boot Camp, Yoga, or Walking Wednesday can count this towards their minutes. If you do anything on your own or outside of school you can also log your minutes as well. We REALLY want to have good representation for BSE because this is a competition that is district-wide for Collierville Schools. Here is all you need to do:
- Click on the link that I WILL BE EMAILING OUT LATER TODAY and fill out the Google form. The deadline to register will be the end of next week.
- Download the workout tracking network app for either your iPhone or android phone. Reference the flyer to assist with setting up the app. Be sure and set your home location to Schilling Farms. Also in the Challenges section make sure you join Collierville Schools: Minutes to Win It** I am willing to assist if needed. **
- Start tracking your exercise.
I will be sending out periodic updates with our point totals to show how we compare with other Collierville schools. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance. We hope you decide to join the BSE team and start off the new year with healthy choices.
Thanks,
Brian Mitchell

PD & Popcorn
Please join us for PD & Popcorn this Thursday, January 10. All sessions will be facilitated by teachers and leaders across the district! Times are staggered to accommodate school dismissal times and snacks and door prizes will be provided! ALL teachers are invited to come and new teachers are highly encouraged to attend! This is a wonderful opportunity for educators to earn PD credit that can be used towards license renewal/advancement, will serve as evidence for the Professionalism evaluation, and award flex time for late hires. Participants will choose sessions that meet their individual needs from a menu of options and leave with effective tools/strategies to use in the classroom! Logistics and session schedule/descriptions are attached to this email. Participants will need to register in MLP.
