MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Walkersville Community,
Today’s 2 hour early dismissal marks midterm for term 1 this year. Please make sure you are checking Schoology and contacting teachers with any questions or concerns. With the kick off to the Great Frederick Fair, I wish good luck to all of our students who will be participating in some way. I will be joining the FFA for their Greenhand Ceremony on Wednesday, and can’t wait to celebrate with our Lions! Fair Day is next Friday, and school has a 3.5 hour early dismissal. We will be running blocks 1 & 2 that day as to keep a routine for our students participating in CTC, AFA, ROTC & work study. Additionally, Monday the 26th, schools are closed.
I hope everyone enjoys a wonderful weekend!

CASS CORNER
September is Suicide Prevention Month
If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is always available. Call or text 988 or go to 988lifeline.org to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Locally, the Mental Health Association is always available in person and online at fcmha.org. They can provide crisis response, walk-in assessments both online and in person, and other mental health resources.
Every year, in the month of September, we take the time to come together to promote awareness for suicide prevention. This week’s CASS corner highlights a few simple ways that you can get involved and support those who are struggling in our own community. Remember, getting involved is not always doing something big. The number one thing you can do to prevent suicide is be an open, caring, and nonjudgmental support for your friends and family. If you are a safe person to talk to, you can give your loved ones the support they desperately need. If you ever feel like you don’t know what to do, find someone who can help. Mrs. Wilt, for example, is always willing to help out.
#BeThe1To
#BeThe1To is a message shared by the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to spread the word about actions that anyone can take in suicide prevention. They encourage everyone to “Be The One To” Ask about suicidal thoughts, Be There for people who are struggling, Keep Them Safe, Help Them Stay Connected to support, and to Follow Up with them. To learn more, go to bethe1to.com.
Out of The Darkness Walk
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) hosts a number of events this time of year across the country. These Out of the Darkness Community Walks are scheduled in different towns to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention. This year’s Frederick walk is taking place at Baker Park on October 15, 2022. To learn more or register, go to https://supporting.afsp.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=8591&language=en.
Ideas for Action
Want some more ideas on ways to get involved and support suicide prevention? The Suicide Prevention Resource Center published a handout that outlines 14 ways to get involved this month. You can find that handout at https://sprc.org/sites/default/files/SPM%20Ideas%20for%20Action%202022.pdf.
Mrs. Wilt is the CASS Coordinator assigned to Walkersville schools. Her office is located at New Midway Elementary School this year, but she can often be found around Walkersville High as she coordinates with students and staff. If you have any questions or would like Mrs. Wilt to reach out to you or your family for assistance, you can email her at Samantha.Wilt@fcps.org or call her at 240-236-1421. If you would like to see a certain topic featured in the CASS Corner, please reach out to Mrs. Wilt.

REGARDING OUR MASK POLICY
REGARDING OUR MASK POLICY
As of 2/25/22, the Frederick County Board of Education has determined that wearing a facial covering will no longer be required because more than 80% of the people in the county ages five and older have been vaccinated. Due to a federal transportation regulation, staff and students will still be required to wear a facial covering on a school bus at all times. Facial coverings will continue to be welcomed and encouraged in all FCPS schools. An important factor as we transition to individual choice to wear a facial covering is the need for all students to respect the choice of others in whether or not to wear a facial covering. Respecting the personal choice of other students means that students should not make unwarranted comments intended to shame or pressure others to not follow their own personal choices. As FCPS moves into this new stage of pandemic recovery, school staff will be vigilant in ensuring that students feel safe and comfortable regardless of their choice in whether or not to wear a facial covering. Students will face disciplinary consequences for failing to respect the personal choice of other students. Thank you for following the mask mandate this year at school and for your flexibility and respect as we transition to personal choice for a facial covering.
HOW POSITIVE COVID-19 CASES ARE COMMUNICATED
Important Definitions:
Confirmed Case of COVID-19 - Cases of COVID that are lab confirmed positive results of a PCR test.
Probable Case of COVID-19 - COVID-19-like symptomatic individual who has had close contact with another individual with a laboratory confirmed positive result within the past 10 days.
Close Contact - Close and prolonged contact within 3 feet of a cumulative 15 minutes in a 24 hour period.
Confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 in the school prompt a case investigation to determine if anyone has been in close contact with the confirmed or probable case of COVID-19. A joint effort between FCPS administrators and the Frederick County Health Department identifies all close contacts. All close contacts are contacted individually and advised to quarantine at home, monitor their health, and to contact their healthcare provider for any health concerns.
The health and safety of our community is our highest priority. Walkersville High School follows all COVID-19 related health and safety guidelines, including requiring face coverings for staff and students, encouraging frequent hand washing, maintaining social distance, and following all cleaning and disinfection protocols. The FCPS Health Metrics Dashboard reports the number of positive COVID-19 cases for staff and students that are in-person attendance at all FCPS schools. The cases are reported two different ways: (1) total number for all of FCPS; and (2) by each school. The dashboard is updated every Monday morning to report the number of cases from the previous week.
