Haskin Happenings
Haskin Elementary School- September 2023
A Message from Ms. Venetucci
We have exciting plans this month, so be on the look out for many upcoming events and opportunities for our students and families. Among the excitement of September, we will be rolling out our Heart of Haskin program which will teach our students the best traits to embody to be a successful student. This will also provide structures and expectations for every location within our learning environment. We will share information as it is being exposed to your children.
Check out the rest of this newsletter for important upcoming dates, links to social media pages, and so much more. I am hoping to see you at the events that will be sneaking up on us shortly.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions that you may have!

Social Emotional Learning from Ms. Haskins
Welcome Back Haskin Families! I hope that you had a wonderful summer and am so excited to be starting another year with all of you! As a quick re-introduction, I am Randi Haskins and I am the Haskin school social worker (I do enjoy that my name is so easy for the kids to remember since it is almost the same as the school). I have been with Sandwich since last school year. I live in Sandwich and love running into my students around the community. I teach Second Step (our district’s program to build social-emotional skills to help them thrive in school and life), meet with students for the social work IEP minutes, and provide interventions for both individuals and groups of students to improve their social skills or self-regulation skills.
I will be calling and sending out permission slips for social work services within the next few weeks for some students. I do this periodically throughout the year, usually based on teacher recommendations, my observations, and the SAEBRS scores from our FastBridge testing. This is a time for me to work with your student to help them develop their already existing skills during the school day. I work with their teacher to make sure that they are not missing any major academic time.
Getting back into school is an exciting but also stressful time for many families. I wanted to help with some tips and tricks to get back into your new daily routine.
Get enough sleep. Set a reasonable bedtime (before 9 p.m.) so that they'll be rested and ready to learn in the morning. Consistent bedtime routines go a long way in helping kids have a great day at school.
Eat a healthy breakfast. They're more alert and do better in school if they eat a good breakfast every day.
Write down the need-to-know info. This helps them remember details such as their locker combination, what time classes and lunch start and end, their homeroom and classroom numbers, teachers' and/or bus drivers' names, etc.
Use a wall calendar or personal planner to record when assignments are due, tests will be given, extracurricular practices and rehearsals will be held, etc.
Organize and set out what they need the night before. Homework and books should be put in their backpacks by the door and clothes should be laid out in their bedrooms.
It's normal to be anxious in any new situation. This will likely go away pretty quickly. But a few kids develop real physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomachaches, at the start of school. If you're concerned that your child's worries go beyond the normal back-to-school jitters, speak with your child's doctor, teacher, or school counselor. I am available to chat with you if you have any questions or concerns or need any help. Please feel free to reach out. I am available at 815-786-8812 x24007 or at rhaskins@sandwich430.org.
Have a great school year!

TREAT POLICY
Our first newsletter included a link to access the student handbook for the 2023-2024 school year. We encourage you to read through the document and let us know if you have any questions or concerns. It is a lengthy document that covers a wide variety of topics. Therefore, I wanted to highlight a significant change from previous school years related to our "treat policy." We are no longer allowing food treats to be sent to school. Please read the updated policy below.
Celebrations and positive reinforcement are an important part of our district’s culture of supporting students. Often students bring treats or snacks to school to share on special occasions. Due to food allergies and other health concerns, we do not permit students to bring in food items or treats to school to share. We would like to encourage healthy eating habits and promote non-food items such as pencils, stickers, bookmarks, or other small items in place of food treats. Curricular activities involving food will be dealt with individually. Safety provisions will be set up for food or environmental allergies on an individual basis.
FREE AND REDUCED MEAL PROGRAM
Are you struggling to pay for fees, lunches, field trips, and/or extra fees? Please be aware that there are opportunities to get help with school fees, field trips, lunches, and other fees.
We currently utilize the free and reduced waiver program through the USDA. If you qualify, this waiver may cover lunches, registration fees, sports fees, field trips, etc.
If you would like to know more about this program, what the qualifications are, or how to apply, please call Mrs. Kruswicki at 815-786-2187.
Please remember this program must be renewed every year. Since we utilize the guidelines of the USDA program, we must use their forms. Please make sure to do this as soon as it is available.
For those who would like to apply for free/reduced lunch, please do so using the following link: Online Application. Families who qualify for free/reduced lunch will have their registration fees waived or reduced.
Note: You can also learn more about this program through the USDA Income Eligibility link.
