MJS Class of 2016
A Newsletter for All Things 8th Grade
Celebrating our Veterans
Veteran's Day is Wednesday, November 11. We will meet for morning prayer in school families (instead of by class). The Cub Scouts, led by Boy Scout Nico Manes, will be leading a presentation of the flag, and a veteran speaker will lead our prayers. Stars honoring veterans will be posted by the 8th graders on our Wall of Heroes in the gym.
On Wednesday, November 11, we will allow students free dress - red, white, and blue - but please be mindful that there is an Open House, so students and teachers should not be too casual in their attire.
We are hoping to celebrate Veteran's Day with all the honor and glory it deserves. Thank you to all those who have served our country.
Why wasn't there school on November 2nd & 3rd?
Curriculum Spotlight: DRAMA!
What do we do at auditions?
Vocal Audition
Students will be expected to prepare a short song (16-32 bars) from a musical that demonstrates their range as a singer. They will sing a cappella, an accompanist will not be provided. Students will be assessed on your pitch/tone, acting/stage presence, and overall ability. Their professionalism and enthusiasm is as important as their talent.
Dance Audition
Students will be taught a short combination and asked to perform it in small groups. They will be assessed on technique, stage presence, and overall ability. Students will not be expected to perform the routine perfectly, but they will be expected to demonstrate professionalism, enthusiasm, and a willingness to take risks.
Acting Auditions
Students will be expected to prepare a short monologue (between 30 seconds and 2 minutes) in the style of the character they wish to audition for. They will be assessed on projection/articulation, expression/bold choices, and overall ability.
Callbacks
Students will be given a scene or song from the play to practice briefly and then read/sing for the group. Not all roles will necessarily be “called back.”
Does everyone have to audition?
Yes! This is a class, and auditioning is an important part of what I have to teach. It builds self-confidence, public speaking skills, and will help in future interviewing situations (like for high schools). Students will audition in front of a panel of teachers and classmates, so that they will have a wide variety of feedback, and so that we can all learn from each other.
When do we find out our parts?
Casting will be determined by Mrs. Byrne and posted in Schoology during Thanksgiving Break. Please remember that casting a show is like putting together a puzzle, it is not a competition. Every part is important to the telling of the story. "There are no small parts, only small actors."
When is the show?
