COUNSELOR AVAILABILITY

Counselors will be participating in professional development on Monday, August 31, and may be unavailable. If you have questions, you may email your child’s counselor, but we do appreciate your patience in allowing them time to get back to you.

Our Counselors are:

Last Name A-K: Ben Brenner brennerb@sycamoreschools.org

Last Name L-Z: Kristen Suter suterk@sycamoreschools.org

All Virtual Classroom Students: Rachel Morris morrisra@sycamoreschools.org

COURSE AVAILABILITY

With the offering of both Virtual and Face to Face classrooms, our intention all along was to try to offer as many elective courses as possible in a schedule that would allow each student to be enrolled in his or her first choice elective. However, the complexity of some student enrollment profiles meant that some requests could not be honored. In these cases, students may have been enrolled in an alternative elective or in a study hall. Virtual classroom students will see “Screen Break” in their schedules. Students may use this time as a study hall, screen break or movement time.

News Crew: Unfortunately, due to low demand by students enrolled in the virtual classroom, a virtual version of SJH News Crew will not be offered.

Supply List

As a reminder, students will need the items from our GENERAL SUPPLY LIST every day.

In addition, select subjects/teachers require additional items. Please consult the TEACHER SPECIFIC SUPPLY LIST for these items.

Final Forms

Please remember to complete all student forms electronically through Final Forms at www.sycamore.finalforms.com. If you have questions or difficulty in this process, please email our district tech department at helpdesk@sycamoreschools.org.

Immunization requirements

The Ohio Department of Health requires all students prior to entering the 7th grade to have (1) dose of MCV4 (meningococcal) and a Tdap (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis) booster.

Proof of immunization from the doctor’s office must be given to the school before the start of 7th grade.

Immunization documents can be brought to schedule pickup, dropped off, or mailed to the JH, emailed to the JH Nurse Amy Bonham at jhimmunization@sycamoreschools.org or faxed to (513) 792-6192. If immunization records were previously given to EH Greene another copy will not need to be sent.

Questions regarding immunizations may be directed to the school nurse, Amy Bonham at bonhama@sycamoreschools.org.

Picture Day is coming!!

Josten's is our new School Photo vendor. Students will have pictures takes - no paperwork or order forms are required. After picture day, please visit www.jostenspix.com with the event code FE0620 to view and place an order, if desired.

PTO News

Welcome to the 2020-21 school year, SJH Families!

Despite the many uncertainties surrounding the upcoming school year, the SJH PTO is still active in supporting our families and staff!!

The PTO has chosen to provide membership at NO cost this year. Your FREE PTO membership gives your family access to the Sycamore Junior High Student Directory, which is published through an app called Directory Spot. In order to have access to Directory Spot this year you MUST fill out the membership form.

This year, the PTO is faced with the challenge of fundraising during a global pandemic. Because our annual fundraising events are currently on hold, this could greatly impact our ability to give back to our students and staff throughout the year. The PTO Board has chosen to offer a "Hassle-Free" fundraising event in hopes that we will be able to maintain our level of financial support to the Junior High. Hassle-Free donations can be made on the website listed above. We appreciate your support!

Questions?? Email Kim Hueil at jhptowaysmeans@sycamoreschools.org.

F2F Learning: Family Presentation

Sycamore Junior High looks forward to welcoming 7th and 8th-grade Aviators back into the school building for the 2020-2021 school year. For 7th graders, the building and staff will be brand new! For our 8th graders, the building will look familiar, but expectations may be different. In order to keep everyone as healthy and safe as possible, we have instituted new procedures, routines, and behavioral expectations.

Previewing uncertain or new situations may help decrease anxiety or concern while promoting expected and safe behavior. We at Sycamore Junior High would like to share some images of what students may expect when they arrive for Face-to-Face learning.

This presentation is not exhaustive of every new routine or procedure. Please utilize these slides in conjunction with other information from the Smore communication.

Please take a minute at your convenience to watch this with your student: PRESENTATION

Arrival Protocols

Phones and other valuable items

As a reminder, students will be carrying backpacks during the school day with all their items inside. Because there may be occasions when a student will need to temporarily leave his/her backpack unattended, we are changing for this year only, the policy about having phones on their person. Students may have their phones on their person but the phone MUST remain OFF until the end of the school day.

We also want to discourage students from bringing valuable items to school, including iPods or other expensive Bluetooth earbuds. While every student will need headphones or earbuds for class we ask that you only send basic ones for your student to use during the school day.

CHROMEBOOKS

Every student will need his/her district issues Chromebook every day. Each day in each class, students will be engaging in digital curriculum. Therefore, it is imperative that students come to school with a fully charged Chromebook. Please work with your student to set a routine at home that includes charging the device every night. We also suggest you and your student "test out" the charge duration on the device to make sure that it lasts the school day.

Kickoff the School year with Kona Ice

Kona Ice is coming to SJH! We will have Kona Ice trucks here after lunch on September 3 and September 4. Please have your student bring $1 for a cone.

What if I need to pick up my student after school

All families of F2F students should have received in the mail Car Rider Pickup Tags with instructions on the after school pickup process.

Even if your student rides the bus, there may be occasions when you need to pick up your child at the conclusion of school. These tags and the new process will help ensure a safe pickup.

Please see the PDF below for the procedure information. If you do not receive the letter and tags in the mail by next week, please contact the JH.

Nametags

We want to help teachers and students create meaningful connections even with mask-wearing! To facilitate this, we will provide students with nametags in an effort to get to know each other. Students will need a dark pen with which to write their name on the tag.

Clubs and Activities

The Sycamore District has made a decision about extracurriculars. At this time, all extracurriculars (not including sports, band, and theater) are suspended until October 1, at which point we will reevaluate our ability to reinstate these activities.

Visitor Policy

We encourage you to work with your child to help him or her remember items like lunch or school work. Please remember that the district has instituted a NO VISITOR policy in our buildings for the time being. Thank you for your cooperation.

Chromebooks

You should have received a message from our District regarding Chromebooks. Highlights include:

1. Students in VC will need a Sycamore Schools issued Chromebook for testing purposes.

2. Families must register to receive a device for handout on Aug 31 and Sept 1

3. The 1-4 grades must bring back their device from April and get a different device due to operating system compatibility.
