HARWICH COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND UPDATE
A message from mrs. oldach, principal
The first two weeks of school have been remarkably successful with our academics in full swing for both in-person or distance learners. Children are enjoying outdoor instruction and have quickly adapted to the socially distanced norms in the school. Thank you for your support at home and to our creative staff for adapting instruction to the outdoors, on-line and indoor spaces. It has been wonderful to see our school garden and outdoor instructional spaces buzzing with our students.
Over the next few weeks, our teachers will be administering a number of assessments to each student to discern where learning should start for your child this year, given our school closure last spring. A team Monomoy elementary teachers developed this plan over the summer which incorporates many familiar assessments such as MAP (Measures of Academic Progress). The results of these assessments will be available to you at fall conferences with your child's teacher.
Assessments are designed to find out where a student is at this moment in time, and in order to figure this out, we need to assess them using questions that they may or may not have been taught or mastered "yet." Believing that you can master a challenge is a concept called the Growth Mindset developed by Carol Dweck, a pioneer in the research behind motivation and how a growth mindset fosters success. As parents, you can support your child by acknowledging that learning anything new involves some level of challenge.
Below are links to Growth Mindset books and videos, and visuals that you may like in your home.
Sincerely,
Mary

Arrival and DIsmissal Update
Thank you to our HES caregivers for your patience and flexibility with Door 3 and Door 6 drop offs and pickups. The process has become more efficient as staff and families have settled into this new routine.
School dismissal is "officially" at 2:15pm, however, we must start caregiver pickups earlier than 2:15pm to accommodate the volume of cars, and the work day of our staff.
Pickups now begin at 1:50pm and will end at 2:20pm. Please note these adjusted times. If you need to pick up your child later than 2:20pm, please make arrangements for after school care.
