Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 2/6 - 2/10
February Fun in Second Grade
Fundations:
We finished Unit 9 this week and began Unit 10. Our focus will be on a new syllable type called the "D" syllable because it contains a double vowel combination: two vowels next to one another such as "ay" in the word play. The other vowel team in Unit 10 is "ai". The packet for Unit 10 was sent home yesterday. Please check your child's blue folder for this important resource.
Literacy:
This week we have been discussing tone and feelings in poems. We have also been comparing and contrasting poems to note poetry features such as line spacing, narrow vs. wide lines, stanzas, figurative language, and theme. We ended this week with the Schoolwide Poetry Unit Assessment. The students really flourished in their analysis, understanding, creativity, and writing skill as they progressed through the Poetry Unit. This comes under the Common Core Standard RL.2.4 - Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. There were quite a few students blessed with "poets' eyes" and "poets' hearts."
Math:
We began this week with a review of many math strategies for adding and subtracting numbers within 100. We also completed our Real World Experience for this unit which had a scenario of students collecting plastic water bottles to win a contest for a new, green school playground. Many of the students wished that this could be a REAL situation...they are so passionate about helping Mother Earth (and a dream playground)!
Writing Workshop:
Poets were hard at work every day in Writing Workshop refining poems and/or writing new ones. We ended this unit with a "Poetry Slam" celebration and shared poems with Ms. Valentour's class. Snap, snap instead of applause...just like real coffeehouse poetry slams. The students loved it!
PTO Assembly:
On Friday, the PTO presented the school with an assembly titled "The Mousetrap." Using balloons, "Mr. Smartypants" taught us about Simple Machines. We learned a lot and in an enjoyable and fun way. Thank you, PTO!
Soleil Tate was LAST week's STAR of the Week but due to my illness, there wasn't a flyer last week.
