Peabody Elementary Weekly Update
April 20 - April 24, 2020
Dear Parents,
Each week we've included suggestions as our students learn from home:
- Establish routines and expectations: Try and set school work hours, continue normal bedtime routines, and build in breaks during the day.
- Define the physical space for your child’s study: We encourage families to establish a space/location where their children will learn most of the time. If possible, consider having a space that is public in order to monitor a student’s focus during the day.
- Encourage physical activity/exercise.
- Remain mindful of your child's stress or worry: Self-care and emotional self-regulation are also very important during these uncertain times. That's why the District is making it possible for students and parents to connect with school social workers and counselors around the clock for resources and assistance with social emotional concerns. Mrs. Turner has provided information in this week's newsletter for access to these important resources.
- Reach our for support or guidance: Please email your child's teacher with any questions or concerns as we navigate through this time.
Sincerely,
Your Peabody Family
Important Updates from Principal Nelson:
MEDICATION/GLASSES
If you have medication at school for your child, Ms. Felder will distribute this medicine to parents Wednesday, April 22nd only from 11-1 at Peabody. Only the parent or someone listed on the child's data form who is 18 or older can pick up the medicine and everyone must present a Picture ID/License to pick up.
Please wear a mask or facial covering and practice the 6 feet social distancing guidelines when entering the school building.
FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS
We want to celebrate our 5th grade students in a BIG way because they deserve to be recognized!!! Therefore, I am asking parents to share some of your ideas with 5th Grade Chairperson, Julia Davis, davisj17@scsk12.org. Please consider that it may be a virtual celebration depending on when the Mayor lifts the Stay-at-Home order. If the order is lifted by June, we might can plan something where we gather together. We will gather all ideas and share our plan sometime in May.
FIELD TRIP REFUNDS
If you paid for a field trip that students were suppose to attend anytime after March 12th, you will be refunded. However, we do not know when. SCS is working on a process for issuing these refunds to parents. We will notify parents once a distribution plan for refunds is in place from SCS.
Student and Teacher Spotlights! We're All in This Together!
Mrs. Katz would like to recognize parents and students from 1-01, 1-02, and 1-03 for getting Microsoft Teams downloaded and joining for online learning. They are AWESOME!
Counselor's Corner
Hello Peabody Eagles! Did you know that April is Stress Awareness Month? As we process the news of continued school closures and continue to deal with the effects of COVID-19, I felt that a few tips for managing stress would be helpful for children and adults. Check out the short video below!
If further assistance is needed, Shelby County Schools has launched two new social-emotional learning support lines for students and families. One support line is a 24-hour informational line. You may call this number (901) 416-2626 for pre-recorded messages 7 days a week.
The second support line is a LIVE SEL support line where you will be connected with a member of SCS Mental Health Center (901) 416-8484. Please visit the following link for more information www.scsk12.org/SELsupport
regarding the support lines and other local and state-wide support organizations.
You may also reach out to me via email. Continue to stay safe and healthy!
Love,
Mrs. Turner

Relax and listen to a good story on our favorite website: Storyline Online!
https://www.storylineonline.net
Note: Most of these books are AR, so don't forget to take the AR test after you listen to the story.
READING WITHOUT WALLS: Explore books about characters who look or live differently than you, topics you haven't discovered, or formats that you haven't tried.
- Read a book about a character who does not look like you or live like you.
- Read a book about a topic you do not know much about.
- Read a book in a format you do not normally read for fun: chapter book, graphic novel, a book in verse, or an audio book.
- Write about what you learned: the person, culture, topic, or book format.
