NAVIGATING THE SWAMP

GHS COUNSELORS' MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

AUGUST 2021

WELCOME BACK MIGHTY GATORS

Last school year was a year like no other. We are back and ready to make the 2021-2022 school year the best in Grulla High School History! The GHS Counseling Department has created a monthly newsletter to help, guide, instruct, and inform students. Important information will be posted and updated each month within this newsletter.

SCHEDULE CHANGES

Once school begins on August 16th, due to 1st day procedures, attendance, and district policies, there will not be any student schedule changes until August 18th (Wednesday).

In order to help with student needs this year, the GHS Counseling Department is offering two ways for students to make changes to their schedules.

1. Students who need to see their counselors and make changes to their schedule will be able to make appointments at the cafeteria during lunch periods! There will be QR Codes printed at the cafeteria that will send you to appointment times. Just select the available days and times of your counselor.

M. Rodriguez: A-Garcia

A. Laurel: Garza-O

I. Navarro: P-Z

D. Almaraz: Special Services

Some students might not need to see a counselor if they have "easy changes" to their schedules. For example:

a. No lunch period

b. Having a class that has already been taken

c. Missing a core area class

2. If you wish not to see a counselor, click and fill out this Schedule Change Google Form. The GHS Counseling Department will make the changes and notify you by email when the changes are complete. There will be a QR Code for this link at the cafeteria as well.

SCHEDULE CHANGE WITHOUT SEEING COUNSELOR

Deadline for student schedule changes is on August 31st.

***THESE LINKS WILL BECOME ACTIVE ON TUESDAY DURING THE LUNCH PERIODS***

AP DROP FORM

In order to encourage all students to complete coursework that prepares them for the successful pursuit of post-secondary education, this form must be completed in its entirety prior to a student being removed from an AP/Pre-AP course. Parent’s signature is required after the Counselor/Administrator/Teacher have fully explained the ramifications of dropping AP/Pre-AP courses. Overall GPA and Final Ranking could be affected (EIC Local). As educators at RGCGCISD, we highly encourage students that meet the criteria for Advanced Placement courses to work hard, complete all assigned work, and be prepared in class. If a student and parent are determined to drop their child from an AP/Pre-AP course, the Counseling Department and Administration have exhausted every avenue and fully explained the effects and outcomes of the decision.

AP Drop Form

Please download and print the AP Drop Form. Complete the form and meet with your Counselor.

TSI TESTING

Grulla High School is dedicated to helping students succeed in and after high school. Passing the TSI Tests are required for students interested in Dual Classes. Also, Gator Graduates have the opportunity to take the TSI Tests on campus and be College Ready! Throughout the year, this monthly newsletter will have updated information on testing dates.

GHS COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

Big picture
Not only is the GHS Counseling Department utilizing the Navigating The Swamp monthly newsletter to help students, but new resources have been added. Be on the lookout for our GHS Counseling Billboard located in the lower level wall of the cafeteria and make sure to visit our GHS Counseling Conference Center located by the GHS Counseling Department offices (Room A112). Both the Billboard and the Counseling Conference Center will be great resources that our Counseling Department have set up to help our Mighty Gator Students have a successful 2021-2022 school year!

THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARING SPOTLIGHT

SEL'S

Grulla High School Students are entering a new school year facing a multitude of new opportunities and challenges.

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is important in high school simply because it encompasses practices that help students with key areas: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. These core competencies are pivotal in the high school setting for students to master.

The GHS Counseling Department will be highlighting SEL activities and information on the Navigating The Swamp monthly newsletter.
